In some ways independent bottling can be a punt. In the most basic terms many of them buy barrels when they are young in the hopes of making a profit when the spirit is older.

There is no guarantee but, I tend to think if you stick to an experienced bottler then your in safer hands.

It's odd, I really didn't like the peaty taste to start with but it's becoming a favourite now. I'm a little scared of buying it though in case it's a bit overpowering for me. The Talisker is nice, I have a drop going now.

                    • Yeah, the peat is a grower. I wasn't much for the heavy stuff at first but before I knew it I loved it.

                        • I want to try the WR.
Bought a bottle or JW Red Label today after recent talks here. It's actually pretty nice for its price ?18 and no discount. Has a bit of everything in there but quite evenly balanced. I nearly went for the Jura Origin but that was ?25 and I was looking for an every day whisky. I'm intrigued to try the better offerings now, the only big critique I have for the red label is that it's a tad watered down tasting compared to what I cut my teeth on. I'm wondering if bourbon represents better value for money in this regard, eg the cheaper stuff is relatively good.

                          • Another question, sorry. I drink all whisky neat without water or ice and enjoy it that way. Does anyone here take ice or water with it? I haven't tried cask strength but I'm assuming that would be the stuff one adds water too? Personally I doubt I would because I like as much flavour and richness as possible.

That is some serious stock. I've got about bottles in the house and the other half is telling me it's too many...
