I have often wondered about blending Talisker, Caol Ila, Cragganmore and Linkwood myself to see how close I can get.

I guess you'd have to blend the exact amounts for it to be the same

Our conversation has inspired me to dig out the whisky. Damn it's good!

What do you all think about bottlings of old whisky by associations, clubs and third parties? I think it's something akin to The Book Club selling cheaper printings of books, the print is the same but the jacket is different.
I ask because I have found a 45 year old Speyside bottled by The Perfect Dram and it's practically being given away at ?199! Well yes that is a lot of money but cheap for a whisky of that age. Can it really be what it appears to be? The chance to get a 45 YO for that price seems too good to be true, you know what they say about things that appear to be too good to be true......

But speyside what, There is a lot of old grain whisky about which is not the same thing. Also whats the ABV as a lot of the older stuff you will find is cask strength. Bottlers are generally more expensive as they bottle cask strength or special one offs that the distillery dont do as a whisky of its own.

Found the one you mean it is a malt, Can find 5 other bottling from the same year from that distillery. Bottled over a couple of different years all comes down to taste which you wont know till you buy. Age is not everything either

independent bottling is usually cheaper, but can be hit or miss. As Rascal said if its a secret bottling(and you cant find the distillery out on google) I would probably avoid.

To give you an example though

Of course, I absolutely understand that age isn't everything. You can't polish a turd and all that. I simply wanted to understand how these independents offer their whisky cheaper. That one was a Tomintoul but not at cask strength. What do you make of this particular offering.

Basically what I want to know is can you procure something that would normally be out of your reach by purchasing an info pendant bottling like this or is it always going to be dodgy? I'd like to buy a bottle of something really special for odd nips for no more than 150, I like speyside and highland and I'm quite keen on sherry finish and the others you get such as bourbon barrel, rum, tawny port etc.

Port finish is nice, but a old port is not it completely over powers it fit for nothing but the drain. The problem is with the ones your looking at are single casks bottling. So not much info on them as so small bottling so they could be hit or miss. Also they are a lot of the time cheaper as you can notice they are malts that are normally used to make a blend wither thats good nor bad its hard to tell. But you can get independent bottling of more main stream ones you recognise as well. Other thing is price sometimes is to do with rarity more than how good it is as well. I have had 5 year olds that have been heads and shoulders above other 18 year olds. Smoother as well. Your basically taking a punt with these could be great or you could prefer something that was run of the mill for 25 quid from the supermarket.

That would be gutting. So I guess it's better to go with one of the older offerings from your favourite distillery. For example I really like the Balvenne so this older Pirt finish might be good for me.

I have lots of supermarket stuff all be it nicer bottles, what if like to find is something extra special.

The other option would be to try samples master of malt do 3cl of alot of what they sell

I saw this before and for some reason forgot about it. Thanks for bringing this to my attention again, I really want to try some of the more expensive stuff like the Glenfarcas Family Reserve. ?25 for 3cl is a shed load but it's a chance to see how it drinks without buying a bottle. I think I'll do a sample selection and use that to decide what posh bottle to buy.

Looking through I saw this Adnams Single Malt, I tried it at the Adnams shop and it was lovely but the bottle had some kind of white fluffy looking stuff in the bottom. Very odd.
