The Whisky / Whiskey thread
A heads up for Islay drinkers.
Im not usually a buyer of 'supermarkets own brand' whiskeys but occasionally when a good Islay edition comes out its worth drinking, primarily as you can be assured that its come from one of only 8 or 9 distilleries on the island (and in my opinion they're all worth drinking.) Aldi are selling an Islay edition under the name 'Glen Marnoch-Islay'. Retails for ?17.99 and not only is that phenomenal value but it is very good.
Its flavour profile has the classic peaty, smoky, 'leather tobacco pouch' notes that are common with Islays but to me this whiskey is extremely similar to Laphroaig but without the astringent flavours. Maybe more akin to Laphroaig quarter cask as it has a touch of sweetness. If you like your Islays you cant miss this one. Its a limited release, so probably only around up to Christmas.
