@Sean good luck hope it leads you down the wonderful world of single malts. Best to go to a scotch bar and try it like that bit expensive for a dram but in the end your not stuck paying for a bottle your not into. also a great way to talk to some knowledgable scotchheads

My advice is to try, Jura, Glenmorangie and Laphroig,

        The reason being:
        Jura: Light, Delicate
Glenmorangie: Is pretty close to middle ground in every aspect
Laphroig: Is an introduction to peat

It doesn't have to be these three it could easily be: Glenfiddich, The Singleton and Caol Ila for similar reasons.

Sip at room temperature, and if it's a bit too potent and/or you can't pick out flavours then add some high quality bottled water drop by drop (literally with a pipette if you have one) until it just starts to "blossom" (you will know what I mean).

Once you have tried the three I advised we can start to single out what you like in a whisky and start to direct you to other brands/bottles you may like.

I actually really enjoy Monkey Shoulder, based on you finding that harsh I reckon a few drops of water will see you well.

On water, I have pretty much settled on this as my go to water for whisky.

Water as nature intended. Spring water sourced directly from 2,500 acres of rugged Scottish land in the Ochil Hills.

couldn' you just go to the moors there and bottle your own waters by the rocky riverbed? would it be the same thing??

Theres certainly some water course's in Cumbria that I would drink from directly. The only worry is dead sheep upstream.

There used to be a spring in the village I grew up in, but it ran dry

Buxton has some great water too.

darn. hmmmmmm... does it taste like that highland water that they sell for 10 bucks a litre? i mean, i'm pretty sure some of that water would have some mild peat content, anyways?
