We did a Plantation rum tasting at the last incarnation of 1 St James's.

A mixed bag for me but some good stuff in there.

I've tried a few such as captain Morgan etc and never been that stuck. So I applied the same logic as I use for whisky eg if someone gave me bells neat I'd say I don't like whisky however I nice malt and were at the races. Low and behold a rum that's meant for sipping is pretty good, especially paired with the oliva I'm currently pairing it with.

There are worse things to obsess about than rum haha, plus rum is a very cheap spirit when compared to almost everything else. You can get some beautiful rums for between twenty and thirty quid a bottle and some of the consistently best reviewed rums rarely go over 50.

I've got my eyes on a bottle of Los Valientes at the minute, I didn't even know the mexicans made rum but apparently it's amazing.

Tequila is great too... though underrated due to some of the awful standard examples most people have tried.
