Laphroaig 10yo Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Had a few glasses of Laphroaig 10yo tonight with a friend while we stood outside his flat having a smoke.
I'm not a massive whisky fan but I did quite like this one.

Just reading review on whiskey exchange...."Laphroaig 10yo is a full-bodied, smoky gem, with a residual sweetness and a hint of salt amidst the seaweedy, peaty characters before a long warming finish. A classic dram."

Laphroaig is an awesome dram and if you like the smoky peatiness of it, you'll love talisker 10yo or the ardbeg as well.
when you get a chance like that, check them out. they're also great drams

The smoky peatiness did work for me. Yeah I'm more a rum man but did enjoy that tonight so I will be looking into a few different whiskys.

Don't forget Caol Ila 12.... Caol, Laphroaig, Talisker and Ardbeg comprise the smoke/peat monters, they are all good but Talisker and Ardbeg take it for me.

Further Edit: just browsing my bottles and remembered Bowmore 12, has peat and smoke in abundance but is slightly sweeter also.

Plus one for the Ardbeg. Absolutely love the stuff be it standard bottling or one of their others. Particularly like the Uigadhail. The Supernova is ridiculous in terms of peatiness!

on the note of the bowmore 12, i'll take Jura over that any day! the sweet peatedness REALLY works out nicely..
but yes. lagavulin was the other major one that i forgot (some how). finished a distiller's bottle a month ago and it was fantastic!! wish i paired it better than a simple Cuaba Divinos though.....

and yupp sludgie.. we in the business call that "ugly tail"
oh and peat project and PEAT MONSTER. both from a normally unpeated islay: bruichladdich (but what the hell DON'T they make anymore, )

What about the Octomores? Not tried any myself, but I understand they're also very peaty?

Jura 10 i find to be one of my favourites... at any level! . never tried as much bowmore though.. for the price, i should consider it next time.

and whoops, my comment earlier implied that bruichladdich made Peat Monster.. my mistake! i meant to say that both bruichladdich peat project and peat monster were made by regions that aren't known for peatiness.. can't remember if peat monster was lowlands or speyside. also never tried any of bruichladdich's links..... they don't exist in my province. we have around 10 bruichladdich makes at our government stores. so around 10% of our bruichladdich stock is gin

and yes sludgie.. octomore is probably one of the heaviest peated malts. it has a ppm content of around 170. peat project like.... 40? and if i remember correctly, peat monster has around 100. normal speysides and lowlands hover around around 0-10. these numbers were approximate memories from a little article and convo i had a few months back though.
and sides,. i find that the peat monster is actually stronger than the octomore.. but that's just me

It's ok Jeremy I knew what you meant. Incidentally my great grandmother (mother of my maternal grandmother) was a Harvey as the founders of Bruichladdich and she was also called Charlotte as in Port Charlotte where Octomore distillery was founded.

Whimsical and meaningless perhaps, but the Bruichladdich Octomore offerings make me smile because of it.... I still think that Bruichladdich don't need to play the peat game as others (The ones I have reffered to as peatmonsters not the product peat monster) do it so well and within their known character profile.

I am glad that the Octomore name is being put to something though.

I also love the Islay whiskies, for me Ardbeg Corryvreckan and Lagavulin Double Matured are the favourites.

Bruichladdich Infinity was one of the best I ever had the fortune to try, sadly not being made anymore (according to the tour guide at the distillery this was a plaything of Jim McEwan).

Strangely, considering my like of peated whisky I haven't taken to Talisker.

I do like Islay whiskies but it's a taste I've only developed in the last couple of years. Plus, I dont think they pair well with cigars because the assault on your taste buds stops you from tasting anything else

I agree not my favourite pairing with a cigar...but that was my first drop of that particular whisky and really liked it.

I unfortunately don't have any Islay whisky atm but I do have the Johnny Walker Green Label which I got fir Xmas which is pretty smoky. I need to finish off one of the 8 half drunk bottles of whisky on the shelf before I can justify buying another I think
