Ooh I'll keep an eye out in July, off for a weeks hols to Islay, staying in Port Charlotte, then a week in Pitlochry

Dave go to the Bruichladdich shop - you'll pass it most days from Port Charlotte.
Talk to Mary and see what you can taste. Their Valinch us usually interesting.

If you've not been it Islay before PM me closer to the time - I've been a few times (nearly once a year since 1998) and might be able to point out a few things worth looking out.

My local shop, Beers of Europe does a lot of the Gordon MacPhail bottlings but I find them a wee bit expensive...unfortunately not a lot of B&M's near me.....

Dave I think Gordon Macphail bottlings are better value if you buy them direct, mind it's a long trip to Elgin to buy them in person.

Yes, I agree about the value...best I do now is usually a couple of times a year up to Arran...the distillery prices are obscene! there's a couple of places on route though...

My favourite was a Blackadder bottling of Tomatin 15, unfiltered and 62%. Certainly packed a punch, but was an absolutely delightful whisky. Think I paid about ?50 for it.

Currently have a bottle of the Macallan Gold, which was ?36 from Asda and finding it very enjoyable.

Also quite a fan of Abelour A'bunadh (I think that's how it's spelt).

Might not have been 62%... Was a few years ago. Looking around the web, it wasn't 15 years, was 17 years. The Blackadder Raw Cask whiskies are fantastic, always worth looking into.

You could try Cadenheads online. Usually good value independant bottler.
Also Royal Mile Whiskies are another good online retailer.

LFW used to be quite reasonably priced have their prices gone up?

I have one Blackadder bottling - A smoking Islay yet to be opened. I picked it up at John Scott's in Sligub territory.
I'm not sure who else sells them but Whisky Castle do, they are on the expensive side though.

Whiskys.co.uk are quite a good retailer too. They're in Stamford Bridge just near York but are online and reasonable.

And keep it quiet but the Bladnoch Forum do some good bottles from time to time but you have to be an active member to keep up with what's on offer. Raymond the owner is a cool guy who buys casks and bottles them at little profit. I've bought Port Ellen from him at ?35 for a 23 year old cask strength bottle. Alas no deals like that left but good all the same.

Coming late to this thread, I've been working my way through the Islay malts, especially bruichladdich's output! Ardbeg uigeadail is a lovely dram, as is bunnahabhain! I think the top price here is around ?50!!

Never been a great Irish fan - comes of doing three tours in NI in the mid 70s - Johnny Walker Red Label was the free issue then and it certainly did the trick on 48 hour stand-down. Had the odd Jamesons - not bad but I'll stick with Scotch !

I'm not sure what to make of this statement, should I be offended by this, being a belfast native? Being a whiskey drinker, I find Irish whiskey to be a lot more smoother and refined than the majority of scotch I've tried! As puff Scotty said, there are some fantastic pot stilled whiskies to be tried, all for around the ?30-40 mark!

btw, you guys were certainly spoiled when you we given that rancid stuff JW red label! No wonder your taste buds are f**ked up! Lol......

im not an expert by a long chalk, a very long chalk, I once got trollied on Jameson's and all I can remember is the next day my burps tasted like washing up liquid so never had it since. (well apart a shot mixed in a pint of guiness but I was very very drunk at the time!)

Good call on the Uigeadail senor, what Bruichladdich's have you tried so far? The only one I didn't like was the ?80 Black Art, way too sharp for me. I've just been trying to find more Infinity 3 and they have stopped doing that expression .

Whilst I love my Scotch, if I am going to get trollied on Whisky(ey) I would choose a Jamesons most times, there is no way I could drink 1/2 a bottle of Lagavulin and have any tastebuds left!

I really really should get more educated/cultured I have not heard of hardly any of these whisky's, I looked on a website earlier and there was a welsh whisky I didn't even know they made it! (all I know is I love isle of jura god knows what year just the funny shaped bottle from Tesco's its lovely) I cant even look forward to getting educated I hardly drink these days! (not by choice!!)
