Never been a great Irish fan - comes of doing three tours in NI in the mid 70s - Johnny Walker Red Label was the free issue then and it certainly did the trick on 48 hour stand-down. Had the odd Jamesons - not bad but I'll stick with Scotch !Comment

If you like smokey taste then a cheaper alternative is Bruichladdich Infinity 3 (I think 3 is the last one they did but is hard to find now), less peat than Ardbeg or Lagavulin but still distinctly Islay.Exploring the world - one smoke at a time.Comment

AlexG - A very good choice. I remember getting totally bladdered on the 10 year old at a wedding in Aberdeen many moons since with no ill affects the following morning - except the obligatory splitting headache, of course. I remember the Warden didn't speak to me for days - peace, perfect peace ! Must do it again !Comment

Thought this was a Whisky thread.
I've been lucky enough to have tasted some spectacular whiskies (e.g. 1972 Ardbeg straight from the cask in Warehouse number 1) that haven't cost me anything but I guess this post is about what is currently available.
Spending up to the limit of the thread you'd struggle to beat Highland Park 18 or Talisker 18 imho. BUT you don't have to spend ?70 to get a good whisky in fact the fun is finding the cheap good whiskies.
Available in your local supermarket:
Laphroaig Quarter cask if you like peat.
Aberlour 10 y.o. if you like Sherry
Ardmore traditional for a more older style Speyside
Glen Moray unaged - a new Chardonnay finish is available again and was always a reliable anytime dram.
These are all distillery bottlings and so are very consistent. Independant bottlers can often deliver a different slant on a whisky so they can be interesting, but they're not available everywhere. Look for Signatory, Douglas Laing, Duncan Taylor, Berry Brothers & Rudd bottlings to name a few - mind some aren't cheap. Even consider joining the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
Anyway back to my 23 year old cask strength Cambus - mmm lovely and at ?47.50 a steal.Comment

My local shop, Beers of Europe does a lot of the Gordon MacPhail bottlings but I find them a wee bit expensive...unfortunately not a lot of B&M's near me.....
