Got to pull you up on this. Whilst one can make a reasonable cup of coffee with a French Press it is far from the best method.

Tbh, he's a businessman, not a barista. Plus I'm generally inclined to never believe anything the Daily Fail publish!

IMO you can make a pretty decent coffee with a French press, but only with practice and knowledge. Generally I think you can make a much better brew with a filter, and I swear by my aeropress, which I guess is somewhere in between the two.

Ok. Honestly this is all wrong. These are all stories about the same quote. Starbucks are to serious coffee as Henry Wintermans are to serious cigars.

The French Press is not the best, period. You can quote all you like but it is wrong. I have a very good French Press, several mocha pots, chemex, and a custom built Bezzera professional espresso machine and a custom Mazzer grinder. I wouldn't say this so clearly unless i was absolutely sure I knew what I was talking about.

Go and take a look on some of the coffee forums like toomuchcoffee or homebarrista so you can get more info.

Better still buy a chemex, some fresh beans from Hasbean, wait 3 days grind and brew ...you will be shocked at the difference.

...or don't and enjoy you starbucks/french press.

I looooove coffee. I bring a thermos full of it to work every day. I'm a big fan of expresso too. The best coffee you can get is freshly made at home in a French Press. I recently ended up getting stuck with some Aldi store brand Colombian coffee and was all ready to throw it out, but found it's gorgeous. Despite how much coffee i drink, I never accompany it to a cigar. I just don't think they mix imho.

My appoligies for not looking at all of your quotes, after seeing four about the same story I stopped.

One of the most important things I have ever learnt in life is to be open to new opinions. When I started with coffee I thought Illy was the best beans you could buy and I would be so proud when I scored that silver metal tin. A few years ago I thought I would try a tin again and I was shocked as I found them undrinkable.

You are absoultly entitled to your opinion but I would hope open enough to listen to others. I speak from years of experience with coffee, french presses and many other brewing methods. I am very, very confident, from personal experience that my 'opinion' expressed regarding French press method is correct. Perhaps you would like to tell me why you think I have it wrong (beyond quoting a corporate CEO, otherwise we'll get the CEO of Nestle on here and I'm sure he will tell us Gold Blend is the best solution for home coffee). For example perhaps you tried drip brewer/chemex/french press in a double blind test and consistently concluded that French Press is the best. These are the sot of tests myself (and many others in the coffee world) have been involved in. Not to mention ones own daily usage.

Pot. Meet kettle. That sentence is an oxymoron, and completely obstructs its own meaning. You're the one who used both "just wrong" as well as "period". At least i backed up my opinion with references...

I wouldn't think it's too arguable for me to say that the context in which i stated my opinion is a little less absolute than you have made out. Even if i had meant it as undeniable fact, it doesn't even read that way. I know it's not in the same sentence, but there's a big fat "imho" at the end of that post.

This whole debate has condensed down to, despite neither of us knowing anything about the other, the blind assumption that your experience is of more worth than mine.

Now, i refuse to continue a battle of wits with a blatantly unarmed opponent...

I can of course provide many references and data but i think we are not going to get anywhere. More importantly you need to taste, not read what i am saying.

I have a better (and far less confrontational) suggestion. How about i send you some coffee and a filter to try. See if you taste any difference? Do you have access to a burr grinder? Much better i don't send pre-ground as it will deteriorate very quickly if i grind and post.

Another thought is if you are in London/Manchester/Leeds or Glasgow/cornwall i can direct you to some specialist coffee shops who can serve you some excellent coffee from different brew methods, and i think you will have a new experience of coffee.

I must warn you that the experience may ruin you for 'normal' coffee ...a bit like that first great cigar.

Going to a specialist coffee shop is excellent advice, I pretty much just do what my friend tells me to, every time I pay his shop a visit I come away with new ideas, and super super hyper!

Couldn't agree more! I've started drinking tea these days if im somewhere, usually a customer site, that's only offering instant.

Coffee? DID ANYBODY SAY COFFEE!??

I'm a die hard coffee drinker because I simply need it in the morning to get myself woken up.

I don't bother with any percolators or anything like that, just two heaped tea spoons of Nestcafe Gold Blend and some hot water, no milk or sugar. I repeat that about 5-6 times in the morning. I need the hit.
