  • Martinis or cocktails with cigars.

Well its a sad day today ive just run outer gin well except for a half empty bottle of gordons but ill be damned if im drinking that crap.

But it got me thinking im sat here smoking a el ray de mundo lonsdale atm and this stick in itself is not much over medium body at the best of times which im happy to say this is BUT i find they have a amazing floral notes to them which i find very appealing and is the reason i keep coming back them them the other reason being the price for a little over 10 quid.

Now im sure any number of drinks would go well with this from a simple club soda to a light whisky but i find the best combo to be a Hendricks gin martini STIRRED NOT SHAKEN with a half ounce of dolin dry vermouth and a dash of orange bitters just lifts this cigar up above what it is into the zone of a amazing cigar with the floral rose petal notes from the Hendricks gin.

Now it got me thinking about the amount of times a single malt just dosnt work with a certain cigar but a cocktail of different spirits dose so heres my question to this forum what cocktails do you find that work with certain cigars and how do you make them and a why you think they work wont go a miss.

PS. Anyone to mention JD and diet coke gets a free box of Guantanamera crystals

Coke and rum remind me of my friend saying she likes this cocktail cos it tastes just like juice it was a head to table moment.

Now bloody marys on the other hand is a different story as long as its got a good depth of body of spice and not just blow your head off with Tabasco.

I'll mention the JD and diet coke then... Not my thing. But I'll drink it with full fat coke.

I've got to try a bloody mary and cigar I think after the above comments.

          (are the crystals that bad?)

Guantanimos are bad as a whole the crystals are the worst by far.

As for bloody marys knowing the drink it dosnt sound like it works but it really dose "sometimes" its goto be a full punch cigar so its not overpowered but the secret for me is a good quality tomato juice home made is good but i find sainsburys essential to be the best price/flavour wise its damn cheap and tasty but the real thing is not too much tobasco but plenty of great quality cayenne pepper it really lifts the drink up and gives it a nice body of flavour without blowing your head off.

But hay the beauty of a bloody mary its down to your taste.

Ah, the martini. I have to admit that I am a fan of the Noel Coward preparation of just waving a glass of gin in the general direction of Italy. The drier the better in my eyes. Usually just tumble a splash of vermouth over the ice then discard. Perfection is Plymouth in my opinion, but I'm with you on the Hendrick's (a fine drop), and the Gordon's (barely a step up from Beefeater, aka gargling grit). Quite like Martin Miller's at the moment too, another one along similar lines to the Hendrick's.

As to the original question of cocktails with cigars, I tend to stick with highballs. Top options would probably be, in no particular order: rum and coke (Havana Club AE is my go-to), horse's neck (brandy and Canada Dry), G&T (Plymouth and Fever Tree please), or whisky dry (Black Grouse is my mixing whisky of choice at the moment). Also quite partial to a sloe gin and lemonade with the right cigar, my winter replacement for Pimm's.

Yes i have a problem with spelling and grammar thanks for pointing out the perfectly bloody obvious and reminding me.

Sorry i have a tendency to over react when people remind me about my spelling/grammar but heres the thing it aint going to improve it never has probably never will but heres the thing I ALREADY KNOW its crap really no need to remind me yet again.

Bless you 'Rab-meister'.. You truely are an: 'Oak/Soak' (Delete as appropriate) among saplings!

                            All those commas.. for me?
You're just too kind good Sir.
How much do I owe you?
("I take it a post-dated cheque will be acceptable?")

Hang on a sec.. I've just remembered, isn't it true you fellas north of the border have your punctuation marks subsidised by us poor English tax payers?
No wonder you can afford to be so (uncharacteristically) generous!
                            Bloody show off's!

P.S. No offence Reaver old boy.
Remember... punctuation is like mixing cocktails... practice makes perfect.. and gets you pissed.

Ignoring the spelling jabs as i plan to make it even worse you got lot ive just been drinking a i have no idea how to spell that but the gist of it its 5oz of shots layered ontop of each other and it got me thinking about making a seperate one of these for a few cigars to highlight and intensifies the flavourers for every section of the smoke.

But this is what i had and it was pretty good but stupidly hard to make going from bottom to top quite literally all in 1oz measures.

                              Grenedine
                              Creme De Violette
                              Maraschino
                              Brandy
                              Green chartreuse

Dont think that collection would work too well with a cigar but its nice though i might substitute green for yellow chartreuse.
