Had a wee dram of Port Ellen 1978 / 27 Year Old / 6th Release (2006) at the weekend.

What a wonderful drink, subtly peaty, 54% but soo balanced, vanilla on the nose and absolutely stunning.

I commented that it was one of the best malts I have ever had.

Thought perhaps i would track down a bottle

Used to live on the island and was given a bottle for my 40th from the then manager. We polished it off over a few nights but didn't realise the value till now.
Oh well, they make it to drink I suppose.

Port Ellen has a real premium price since the distillery closed. Even rough ones (yes there are some rough Port Ellens) go for a lot of money. It is only going to go up as well because there doesn't seem to be a lot of it coming onto the market recently - maybe there aren't many casks left to bottle.

I have two or three different Independent bottlings of Port Ellen but none of the Annual Releases. A mate of mine has the first five - he thinks number three is the best. Number one has the real value.

I keep trying to get him drunk enough to open one....I'll keep trying.

We are a romantic bunch us whiskyites. Always chasing whisky that is rarely available like Port Ellen and Brora.

I do know someone who gives a two fingered salute every time he passes the almost derelict site. There are those who think that Diageo closed the wrong Islay distllery when it closed Port Ellen over other distilleries it owned on the island.
