  • Great Rum?

I've always enjoyed the taste of rum but in the past it's always been something like Captain Morgan and it's been mixed with a splash of coke... That was until my brother in law gave me a bottle of Goslings Black Seal 151 for my birthday back in March. What a world of difference. I find it very smooth to drink and with a whole host of flavours and aromas and the coke goes nowhere near it! The long and the short of it is I'm now very keen to try some more good quality rum. Can anyone suggest something for me to get my palette around.

    Thanks

I too have just been introduced to Goslings and think it's excellent. I like Trois Rivieres, anything from their range has always gone down well with me

      Here's my recommendations:

Ron Zacapa Centenario 23 Solera Reserve
      Zaya 12 Years
      Plantation Trinidad 2000
      Diplomatico Reserva
      Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva
      Angostura 1919
      Angostura 1824

Stick with any of these, and you won't go far wrong...

      Cheers, HabanoSy

Never seen the attraction in Rum, but then my experience is Bacardi (yeurgh!) or a few nive mojitos over the years, I used to be a brandy/cognac or even better a nice fruity armagnac drinker but then got onto malts and never looked back... is there any way to describe the flavour profile of a good rum? Don't want to spend out on good stuff without some idea of whether or not I'd like it first?

Try anything from Flora del cana (Nicaragua) or El Dorado (Guyana) or Pampero or Barcelo Imperial. If you like Goslings, their finest is Family Reserve - comes in a champagne bottle with a black wax seal. All good sipping rums. Hope this helps

I'm a big fan of both the Zacapa 23 and the Plantation Extra Old.

Try some of the Cubans as well such as HC 15 year old, Ron Vigia Extra Anejo and Ron Varadero 15 year old, all of them very smooth and mellow and the perfect pairing for a good Havana cigar

Just picked up a bottle of Flora del Cana Centenario 12 yr old this is a very good sipping Rum, many flavours only one piece of ice so not to dilute.

Tried the Zacapa 23 last week for the first time and it is a WORLD away from anything I've tried before. I've just upset myself by finding out how much it costs per bottle. I certainly got my money's worth when I tried it...

Thanks for all the replies folks, plenty of suggestions to get me started. I think I'll make a list and try to get though them over time!

Good evening fellow cigar and rum aficionados, it's been quite some time since I visited the forum but thought I'd recommend the exquisite pairing of a MC no 2 with Angustura 1824. I've tried both the Angustura 1824 and 1919 and favour the 1824 due to its smooth, sumptuous and quaffable characteristic. Perhaps 50% more expensive than 1919 (well, in Trinidad it is) but most certainly worth it.
