So last of my Virgina based blends to try after Orlik Golden, Scottish Flake, and Bioyu. With Orlik so far the best of the bunch we come to University Flake.
So very dark plum/prune coloured flakes a deep purple like brown with specks of lighter colour full disclosure I've allowed this to sit for about a month before trying.
Tin note is well stewed plum stone fruit with a molasses hit and just a slight breadiness very inviting smell I must say but all the tin notes have so far been very inviting.
The flake is on the sticker side not overly so, and it crumbles fairly easy but just a little bit more glooper to the feel than Orlik was or the Scottish was.
Onto the lighting of this about 5 or 6 lights to get this going however on each light a very noticeable plum flavour and this is only lightly cased so that Plum really enhances the flavours of the Virginia and Burley in this blend clearly. That Plum settles into a more stewed stone fruit flavour with a slight molasses sweetness and slight spice nuttiness on the finish of the tongue with the stewed stone fruitiness remaining, and it cycles on each puff with nuttiness and fruit taking centre stage but never overpowering, there is a sweetness not too sweet again it's that stone fruit sweetness just really flavorful when balanced with the nuttiness and just pinch of spice.
No bite on the tongue for me and I pushed this one, however bowl did get hot so will be better enjoyed slightly slower. Which when you do makes the flavours that more pronounced though they are very noticeable.
Room note was excellent, leaves that stewed fruit slightly baked bread smell throughout, the Mrs states it was a lovely smell and like Orlik the smell it leaves on your hands is also very pleasant.
Apparently the nic hit on this is supposed to be on the med side and that probably about right.
So where does this rank well it beats the Scottish Flake hands down, it also beats out Bioyu very nicely as well, and it's sort of tying with Orlik. Both of these could be a anytime of day though I think Orlik is the better everyday smoke, University Flake just hits me as a more anytime from the lunch hour onwards smoke.
So yes this is a very close second to the Orlik, a great way to end my little exploration with Orlik and University Flake now being in my rotation. The Scottish Flake I will find a new home for, with someone who may appreciate that more than me.
But highly recommend the University Flake a superb flavorful smoke.
