• Are tobacco tins air tight?

Can I keep the tobacco in the tin it came in (Dunhill on this occasion) or should I decant to a mason jar?

Sorry if this is a silly question, but as a total novice, I'd like to make sure I preserve the tobacco for as long as possible.

Cheers,
A

Great question. My answer..."don't know!"

I recently opened a tin from 2013 and the baccy was fine, albeit a wee bit dry. So, until I hear otherwise, unless I plan to smoke soon, I prefer to leave it in the original tins. The vendors do, so why not you?

Now, having said that, unpacking it and storing in a Masson jar to let it breath a wee bit is probably the safest way to go, but is it necessary (a shrug of me shoulders)? Who know?

But for the record, I ain't no expert when it comes to pipe tobaccy!

This is pretty much what I was thinking; the tins seem sturdy and look the part too (other than those horrible health warnings)

I have some mason jars arriving today so will be putting my loose/pouch tobacco in them for sure.

Or pop a little Boveda pack in the tin?

Now that's something I was wondering about; should pipe tobacco be kept humidified like our precious sticks?

I leave the tins as they are (I have heard of fellow BOTB using foil tape, vacuum sealed bags etc) - when opened I transfer to a mason jar.

As for keeping the tobacco humidified, i've never had any problems when stored in sealed tins/jars. I've seen some people use the C Vaults but there's no need imo. All personal preference ?

So when the seal of the tin is broken, you transfer to a mason jar Scooby?

Air tight till you pop them . Yes you can decant into jars .. yes you can put a boveda bag in as it slows the tobacco drying out . It obviously dries out quicker in an already open tin

Note that the boveda bag will get tainted with the tobacco so dont use it again with cigars

Thanks Tony, I've transferred the contents to mason jars, so hopefully they will preserve the tobacco nicely.

I played around with humidifiers (bags, terracotta disks, etc.) in Masson jars when I began accumulating tobacco, but found it to be a hassle. And as young scooby noted, unecessary if stored in a tightly sealed Masson jar. The right size of course - not too big and not too small.

Luckily the mason jars that I ordered from Amazon are exactly the right size for 50g of tobacco!
