  • Can dry old tobacco be rehydrated?

Hi, so I cracked into some ancient old tobacco the other day but sadly the foil seal wasn't up to much so it's dry and brittle, but still smells amazing and tasted braw in the pipe. Can it be rehydrated and if so any tips on how would be greatly received. Ta

You can do this a couple of ways, you can place the tobacco in an airtight container and pop a boveda pack in for a few days or you can put it in a tub and place a clean damp cloth over the top of it, you will need to use distilled water on the cloth. There are few YouTube videos that are available too.

Can you pop in a slice of apple or pear or is that an old wife's tale?

If you want to last and not get mouldy I wouldn't recommend it

I do the same, but with a slice of potato... it changes less the aroma of the original cut... after 24 hours ( in my hometown where it is very very dry), its enough to rehydrate a can always.

I have got results even with two hours only... I like to check after 2 hours and move the tobacco while keeping the slice in, as soon as it is smokable it should be removed, otherwise mould may appear.

Some tobacco can be smoked pretty well dry as the Belgians do with their Semois. If it's a tobacco that relied heavily on it's oils then it's probably past it's best anyway.

If it smokes well as is then why bother hydrating, if it does not then you have nothing to lose trying any of these methods. Just keep the process to a minimum time wise, pipe tobacco isnt supposed to be 60-70% like cigars.

Which is the best RH Boveda pack to use for pipe tobacco storage?

Don't normally use boveda for storage, I use mason jars. If I'm going to age a tin I don't open the tin until I'm ready to smoke it then transfer it to the jar
