As to a cheapie pipe, it does seem that price and smokeability, in my admittedly very limited experience, do not correspond in a linear fashion. Corn cobs are the chief example, cheap(est?), but versatile and very good smokes. I'm also reliably told that a good Parker (though kind of a separate entity these days, and not always a second/failing) is a good percentage as good as a Dunhill at a fraction of the cost. Frankly I think I'd be flat out scared smoking a pipe worth too much in case I dropped it.
By the by, it smokes well, it looks good, it's totally unique, and it wasn't expensive. It's almost a grail pipe! :-) Nice going indeed.
