• Pipe Newbie

After browsing these forums i've decided I would like to try a pipe. I don't want to spend too much incase I find it isn't for me. I've seen the cob pipes mentioned a few times and i'm thinking of going with the dwarf churchwarden... Good choice for a beginner? I'm also after some tobacco recommendations (nothing light) - 1 aromatic and 1 standard. I've watched a couple of pipe tobacco reviews and one that sounded particularly nice was the Elizabethan mixture.

Other than the cob pipe and the tobacco is there anything else which I will need? Also advice on the best place to buy

    Thanks

I know absolutely nothing scooby, but i tried pipe smoking and it wasn't really for me, i didn't buy a pipe (borrowed one of Father in Law) but i do have some Clan aromatic that i probably won't use. You are welcome to it. PM me your address if you want it, I can't post until friday tho.
Don't think you will go wrong with a Cob to start.

Hey Scooby. Good luck with having a pop.

I'd recommend HH McBaren Old Dark Fired as IMO, it has a nice rich flavour without being overly full or 'heavy' on the palate.

You'll get a number of recommendations in due course, so probably the hardest thing will be to make a choice Some tobacconists do samplers, which could be the way forward??

There is a curve to packing and smoking so have a read around and check out tips and the like on YouTube. oskihen often quotes a helpful channel and hopefully he'll pop into the thread at some point and chip in

Any cob is a good choice imo, along with a sampler. The only cob I have is a legend which is a good size for sampling. GQ tobaccos do mixed samplers at a reasonable price

Some good reccomendations up to now. HH Dark Fired, Good. Cob Legend and GQ Tobacco, Good.

Condor or St Bruno is always worth picking up IMO too. Not the last word in refinement but both classics that are widely available.

You will also need matches and something to act as a pipe tool to first tamp and then remove the dottle. This could be as simple as a golf T.

I first used a 3 inch nail, I still have it in the shed and use it from time to time

+1 with the GQ sampler. I bought myself these sampler/starter packs just before Christmas(http://www.gqtobaccos.com/gift-ideas.../#.VuUxdvG9wQ0), came with everything i needed and i added some samples I thought sounded interesting. After watching some youtube videos,I learned how to pack a pipe in about a week of so over the Christmas period.
I also bought the exploration sampler, loads of different types of tobacco, so you learn what you don't like. (http://www.gqtobaccos.com/gift-ideas.../#.VuUyCPG9wQ0). It comes with a mini guide explaining the differences between the tobacco and how the varying drying methods change the flavours.

?36 for two starter pipes, loads of samples, pipe cleaners and a multi tool, cant go wrong really!

Everything arrived today. Picked up a couple of tobaccos that were recommended and chose some others that just sounded nice! They all smell great
