  • first pipe

I am looking to buy my first pipe. I have never tried a pipe before, I just think I would like it. The kind of pipes I am looking at are churchwarden because I like the look of them. Any advice greatly appreciated. Is this any good http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TOBACCO-SM...QAAOSwstxVKAAw

this is the weird thing I haven't even seen the newer films like hobbit. I'm just really sad and actually like the look of those pipes but they all say gandalf on them now. maybe I'm just a closet tolkien fan

I'm with you.... I like the look of them.... Just no idea if any given pipe is better for any given genre/ style of tobacco.

I wouldn't buy a cheap one like above ...The Stanwell is best as it has a shorter stem which is interchangeable with the church warden one

okay if I'm going to spend that much though i will have to try pipe smoking first. is it right that you can only use one pipe per kind of tobacco

Think you got the right idea newbie but a cheap pipe depending on the size and brand try it out with a few diffent tobacco's
then if you are enjoying the pipe smoking hobby then get your self a nice church warden.
Best if you only smoke one type of tobacco in the warden or any other pipes you may buy
that way you only taste the same tobacco.

Get a basket pipe out of a tobacconist first then commit to a quality pipe after

The pipe you're looking at is a pear wood and as far as I am led to believe burn really hot. The ideal pipe to try a lot of different blends is a corn cob, They're cheap and don't really ghost, ghosting is when you can taste the previous tobacco. You can get a churchwarden type too for around ?15 and it should last a couple of years. Once you decide on a blend get yourself a briar pipe.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment as you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it!

That's another option you can go for.

does it matter how big the bowl is. like do you fill it. I have seen churchwarden style cob and thought that is a good place to start but they look to have a really big bowls http://www.mysmokingshop.co.uk/index...&man=76&cat=67

Your main concern should be the thickness of the bowl
the thicker the wood the less hot it will feel to handle and tou also get a cooler smoke.
