I'm not trying to put you off here Matt. It's certainly not something to overly worry about. Just something to be aware of.

It's also something that we can be fairly certain that will happen less frequently with practice. I assume that it is purely down to the heat of the smoke entering your mouth and inexperienced pipe smokers tend to struggle to keep the pipe going and perhaps draw harder and more often to compensate for potentially bad bowl packing technique.

I do find that particularly high sugar tobaccos like certain Virginias and Higly 'Cased' (flavoured and sweetened) tobaccos are more likely to burn hot and take a little more care and attention. You could also be correct though that moisture in the form a steam plays a role.

and I have even read a theory that it may be actual chemical burns relating to PH levels of the tobacco, though that's a bit of a stretch for me TBH.

It will all come with practice, but tongue bite is something your likely to encounter at some point and you will know when you do. Though normally the sensation goes away within a few hours.

Really helpful information there VTG, appreciate the help again It appears then that the trick is not suck to hard or too fast and relight with a lighter rather than relight with by drawing to much.
I'll have a go at some point and I'll bear your info in mind, cheers!

Picked up a pipe after Christmas and have been smoking it a bit more during the Summer as its a damn site cheaper than cigars. Basically, what they say and it gets easier with time.

Now pipes are such a myriad of choices. I wouldn't even know where to start selecting a pipe

There are a couple of meaningful options and then a lot of stylistic options that have a lesser effect on smoking.

              Very basically you have.

Material: Wood (Normally Briar), Corn Cob, Meerschaum.

Briar is arguably the best all round and will last decades if looked after.

Corn Cob is cheap and easy to get started with, consider them as fairly disposable.

Meerschaum, not my area of expertise. Can last a lifetime with careful use, can be beautiful as they build a patina..... If you know what you are doing.

There is also clay and alternative woods but these are a little less common.

Briar has numerous types of external finishes which are pretty much exclusively aesthetic.

Beyond all of this the other biggest factor will be different shapes and sizes which are a matter of personal stylistic preference. It's useful to have pipes in different sizes for different occasions when you have longer of shorter to smoke..... Though you can just part pack a larger bowl so it's by no means necessary.

There can be an effect on how something smokes due to the pipe shape, with things such as 'System' pipes etc and stem length to some degree..... But overall it is still a stylistic choice.

On top of what tudorguy said make sure the pipe itself is not thin otherwise you'll find they burn hot
go for a pipe that the bowl itself is quite thick.

Thanks once again for the info VTG and Tony! I think I like the look of a bent briar pipe best, maybe an apple or a bent billiard would suit me
One final last question (sorry to bother you again VTG) but does the dreaded tongue bite come on all of a sudden or does it gradually build? and is it very painful or is it like you've just burnt your tongue sort of feeling?
                  Cheers,
                  Matt

Bent apple happens to be my favourite. I think it feels the best in the hand.

As for tongue bite, its like sun burn. Once you feel it starting its too late. Lol

And it isnt stupidly painful but isnt exactly nice either. Kind of like when you scold the roof of your mouth on the hot cheese of lasagne

It's uncomfortable and wrecks your ability to taste until the next morning.

Thanks VTG, you should write a book on pipes with all knowledge on the subject!
                        Great stuff!

it really is affordable. There's tons of second hand bargains around and seconds give you access to unbelieveable quality pipes for cheap..... But, if your crave a hand made master crafted pipe, they can run you to lotto winner prices.
