Yeah, I thought it'd be interesting to have a reference point if there are any out there. It'll help us get some feedback from, generally, seasoned guys.

Believe me, I'm no techy, I just copied the addy from the review site and pasted into the TT post Oski.

A couple of weeks in the jar, shaking and occasional airing and it'll be popped back in the tin. I've had a couple of bowls, and for me it's reminiscent of a slightly milder Durbar.

      Here's what people say

If we can, how about popping review links as we go along?

CAn you go into a bit more detail about what your doing there for us newbees? I thought the idea was to keep baccy away from air as it ruined it?

Aha. Well, I'm not such an oldie here you know, but I read a great article somewhere, sometime ago. It went on about getting tinned tobacco out and putting it in a jar for a few weeks. During this time, give it a shake up every day or so and occasionally open up only briefly to air (having a good sniff type lenght of time). This allows the blend (which is separate strands of tobacco isn't it) to blend and meld together. I've been doing it with my tins and it does improve the smoke in a kind of rounding things out a bit way. I'm no expert, so this explanation may read amateurish and perhaps someone with more experience can offer a better hypothesis to this approach. Overall though, a better, more 'mixed' offering I'd say

Wigan pipe tobacco will dry out extremely quickly in a tin, it's best kept in jars and will jeep for years , some tobaccos flakes etc can be a little 'wet' so you may want to let a flake sit for twenty minutes prior to smoking , with all tobacco your better keeping it in its tinned condition in a jar and drying out a bowls worth as and when you wish to smoke it .

So if I buy a tin its okay on the tin as long as I don't open it but once its been opened transfer to a jar?
How long will it last once tin has been opened but kept in an air tight jar?

Good point re tins Oski as when I return my tobacco to the tin, I keep them in an airtight container. As you say though, and if you've got the space, jars are the way forward over the longer term for sure.

Wiggy, I keep my tins in air tight containers and logic says that they'll keep as just as well. Other opinions may differ

If you buy a tin of tobacco and smoke it straight in a week should be fine but the tin with air taints the tobacco in the long term, I like to have several types of tobacco and a 50g tin may take me 6 months to smoke depending on the mood I'm in . Imo once you've opened the tin transfer the contents to a jar and use the tin for nicnaks .

But there was another thread saying if a tin hasn't been opened it would be fine years and years later. I don't get it

Wigan if you don't open it the tin will last for years and is the best way to age . I'm talking about once you've opened it and let the air in .

Sorry one more question about jars. Storing you want as small as a jar as possible but for the mixing to improve flavour you need a bigger jar to give it room to move when you shake it?

                                New in the baccy jar

I picked up a 50g tin of Rattray's Red Rapparee yesterday. As I got it out of the shop I noticed a ring of dust under the lip (the rest of the tin had been wiped clean) and wondered whether it must have a bit of age on it. Popped the cap...

Stained paper insert and the waxed inner was all tainted too

Smelled divine, (tangy, saucy) and a few strands of the black cavendish had teeny little white crystalline spots on them. I suspect this is a few years old already[emoji4] Had a bowl yesterday and it's mighty fine[emoji5]️
