  • Oh Oh Time to buy a pipe

After not having much love for pipes, because they were evil things that burn my tongue. I have had a play with one for a couple of days. Slowly with a scorched tongue I continued to experiment, finally my perseverance paid off, I managed too smoke this pipe and get No burn..yey

I dont think that a pipe will ever take the place of a good cuban for me, but can now see what pipes are all about and think I may participate from time to time.

which brings me to my question, what pipe should I get? I want something good, but bare in mind it will be for occasional use, so dont want to spend ?500 on one.

Savinelli I'd say you'll get a decent one 70/100 or a Peterson possibly slightly cheaper

Get an assortment of 3 corn cobs.
-One wide bowl for... well.... more tobacco
-One narrow bowl for........ you guessed it
-One more narrow bowl for heavily aromatic flavours.
Don't mix the latter two up. The pipe set shan't cost you more than $40 in Canada (20 quid?). Get a czech tool and a pipe lighter which will cost less than 20 quid together. And finally a giant 1000 pack of pipe cleaners.

Then run over to the shoppe and pick up a generic pipe blend along with another medium-heavy aromatic. The generic pipe blend will save you money as you probably won't be used to the action. The aromatic blend will get you used to tongue bite.
Don't spend too much money in the learning curve. If you tamp it wrong, you could waste the tobacco so don't get too good tobacco right off the bat. Learn to tamp with the house blend that your local store has and learn to taste with the aromatic flavours.

Spend it on $10 corncob pipes instead of $30 briars. Cheap briar pipes are (believe it or not) worse than most corncob pipes. Plus if pipe smoking isn't for you, you wouldn't have invest so much in the habit you're not too familiar with.

Keep it up, Mo! And change the name of this thread so you can update us with your purchases and experiences!

I reckon I could just about to talk myself into this nearly as nice one for 100 quid, maybe

IMO, (H) a couple of days doesn't warrant an immediate pipe purchase. I would evolve the tobacco before evolving a pipe.

I would buy it but I'm still saving.

Keep it well and you will get good money back on it in the future too..... Probably from me in years to come. Lol

Ah Butters thank you. You know I always read your posts through because of these occasional great insights you provide. Figure its worth wading through the majority that are nuttier than a jar of peanut butter to get to the good ones.

Was completely unaware of the range of corn cob pipes and how blooming cheap they are! Thought you got your bog standard one in the starter pack and that was your lot. I can now go try out a variety of size and shapes without outlaying a fortune first.

Some I quite fancy a go of.....
The cute little shortstop is longer stemmed brother of the mini cobs. These small natural cobs are varnished for a little more rigidity, with a pencil like shank and small saddle bit. Ideal for a quick, short smoke and gives a cooler smoke compared to the mini.

May I recommend Dunhill Nightcap or Davidoff Blue
