Yes pipes can have filters, I personally don't use one but if this is your first time with a cob pipe might be worth keeping it in. It's a real personal preference about these. BTW what baccy did you get, can't see it in the picture.

Some nice stuff there, the Uni Flake is pretty strong so be careful with it. Ennerdale flake is nice but has that floral perfumed thing going on.
I've heard good things about Bagpipers dream and St James flake. Anything made by Glynn is usually good as well.
Not had early morning pipe but heard it's quite mild.

Enjoy those, you'll soon be buying more!
Oh and be patient with the pipe, it's not to be rushed and will probably go out a few times. Sit back and relax, it's all about the experience!

Sometimes pipes need filters with heavily aromatic blends in them. I'm sitting beside 3 I pulled out yesterday and the whole room smells like heavy aromas from the pipe tobacco.

All my Medicos have fitable filters that consists of a porous fibre.

My Brighams have a maple wood filter that is very pleasant. I use it all the time but don't ever use aromatic tobacco in them.
