Wow, a lot of info going on there, and all good advice.
Here are my thoughts on smoking a pipe:
1 - The pipe. Corn cob is definitely the way to go when starting out. They are cheap enough to not worry about if pipe smoking doesn't work out for you. Additionally, they don't require any of that breaking-in carry on - just pack it, light it and smoke it. Only downside is they tend to burn hot.
2 - Tobacco. As already pointed out with aromatics, the smell does not very often reflect the taste and they can be very harsh. There are some great aromatics on the market but My own preference is towards the non-aromatics. As VTG has already pointed out, the Virginia tobacco has a natural sweetness to it, whereas the Burley is more rounded and nutty in taste. Other tobaccos like Latakia will add a heavy smoky taste, Perique will add a zesty peppery taste, and Turkish/Oriental will add a fruity exotic taste. In terms of supermarket tobacco, there is the standard trio of St Bruno, Condor and Mellow Virginia. I find the latter bites hard and tastes like a Milkyway chocolate bar.
3 - Lighting up. Despite all the chitchat amongst the purists about liquid fuel I use a Zippo. It's 100% reliable and provides a soft cool flame. A butane torch is not the way to go.
4 - Packing. I've tried all different methods and have settled on the gravity fill with a top-off. Works every time. Don't be tempted to pack to tight. The tobacco will swell when lit and it can be tamped thereafter. If the pack is too light you will have difficulty in getting a light because the air gets drawn through the tobacco too quickly. Tamp and try again. The char light is important, so light it and let it go out, then tamp gently and relight.
5 - Keeping it lit. If the tobacco is too wet or packed too tightly or both then you will fight to keep it alight. The tobacco is too wet if it clumps together when you pinch it. Let it dry out for a bit before packing. Once lit, puff gently, really gently. Sucking like a whore will cause the baccy to burn and result in tongue bite. Tongue bite is not caused by heat but the alkaline produced when the tobacco burns too hot.
6 - Storage. Tip the contents of the tin into a Mason jar with a screw lid. Open it only when you need to or those fabulous, yet volatile, aromas and flavours will diminish.
7 - Cleaning. Keep it clean by running a pipe cleaner through the stem and mouth piece every time you finish. Don't pull the pipe apart whilst it is warm or you risk cracking the stem. Every few smokes use a proprietary cleaning product or some whisky or the like to clean the stubborn stuff.
8 - Relax. Despite the many hundreds of words written in this thread and the appearance of being a dark art, the thing about smoking a pipe is that it 'happens' when you relax and just 'do it'. There is a bit of an art to it and it does take practice and patience, but the steady improvements in developing the skill is, in itself, rewarding. Keep at it and enjoy it.

I must admit, it's a bit of a love hate relationship at the minute. I'm having a smoke most evenings - usually half a bowl. Some evenings it has been an enjoyable experience and others havent, to the point that I don't even finish the half bowl. I'm definitely smoking too hot at the minute and I'm having to drink a lot while smoking otherwise my mouth gets dry quickly and the taste isn't pleasant. Every evening that I have a smoke, it starts well and I enjoy the taste, but after a while, my mouth becomes dry and that bad taste creeps in.

My experience with cigars was much the same at the beginning actually. Also presumably from smoking to hot/quick.

That being said, I'm determined not to give up and I picked up a few new blends from my B&M at the weekend, so I have plenty to keep me entertained!

I think I might pick up a churchwarden in the next week or so, in the hope that it might help me achieve a cooler smoke.

I've seen a 'Mr Brog' churchwarden for around the ?15 mark brand new on eBay. Any thoughts on these?

I've always fancied a Churchwarden myself but never ventured that far. Though reputed to produce a cooler smoke I'm not so sure how true this is. Here is my take on it: If the smoke requires cooling then it has come from the bowl too hot, which is not ideal. The smoke should really be cool enough as it is produced so even a nose warmer pipe won't feel hot. That being said, Churchwarden pipes look the business. Remember, though, you will need extra long pipe cleaners.

A great way to look at it IMO, I'm gonna whole heartedly agree.

This will all settle out as you gain more experience and relax more with your pipe. I would think we have all gone through this at first because we endeavour to keep the thing going with as few relights as possible. But I think this is at odds with the whole experience.
To be sure, excessive relights is very frustrating and the battle to maintain more than a few seconds of ignition does take the fun out of it. However, once you have found the right level of moisture and honed your packing skills you can light up without a fight, take a few puffs, have a chat, have a slurp, and go back to it. You may have to relight but not relight with a fight. Once you find yourself in this territory the dry mouth and all that will be a thing of the past.
In short, dry mouth results from an excessive eagerness to keep it lit.

I figured as much. Funny enough, I was smoking the pipe as I was typing that post on my phone earlier and I forced myself to smoke a lot slower. I was doing a few other bits n pieces and I left the pipe down a few times, then came back to it and re-lit it. I got to the bottom of the bowl tonight without hating it by the end.

I've been using one of those long lighters designed for lighting candles etc and find its a good job for the pipe!

Good, I'm pleased you're getting there.
It's quite a different thing to smoking a cigar even though its just burning tobacco. A bit like driving an automatic to a manual - both are cars, but the approach is different and one needs a bit more attention.

It's not very often I get to the bottom of the bowl. The bit in the bottom gets quite wet and can be quite sour when it burns. It's called the dottle. Don't worry about leaving the dottle.
You will find it becomes wetter the faster you smoke.
There is a packing technique that leaves a pocket in the bottom of the bowl to stop the tobacco getting wet but I personally can't be bothered to mess about like that.

Little update - I've been sticking with the pipe and having a bowl nearly every evening at the minute. Found 1 or 2 tobaccos I like so far. Getting more comfortable with my technique - packing, tamping and keeping it lit. Also picked up a new pipe at the weekend. Just a basket job, but it's my first straight pipe and I like it. It smokes well. Also picked up a wee pipe stand for 99p + P&P on eBay.

I'll hopefully be in Dublin in 2 weeks and I'm thinking about picking myself up a Peterson while I'm down there.

Yeah, I'm trying to stick with it, despite some bad experiences. I got a Balkan blend to try recently and it was terrible. Definitely not my cup of tea!

Finally found a tobacco that I love... Cherry Vanilla - it was just a loose blend in my B&M. Loved it from start to finish. Will pick up more of it this weekend to fill a wee hermetic jar I bought.

On a separate note, I've seen rubber mouthpiece protectors on a few YouTube videos, but can't find anywhere in the UK that stocks them. Does anyone know where I could pick some up? I think I'd prefer to use these over biting down on the stem itself.

Now wrap it in a leaf and smoke it properly!
