I certainly wouldn't recommend UK BBQ charcoal, unless of course you like carbon monoxide poisoning that is! Quicklights are the devils work, always think they taste like matches. Natural coconut coals are all I've used for years now, Coco Nara or Cocobrico are the best IMO.

I've used a blow torch on the cocobrico's i've got. Take your time and make sure they're well lit. Someone (I think Marc) recommended doing it in a metal bowl which I think I will do tbh as it'll keep the heat concentrated and should be quicker.

On a slightly related note, get yourself a tub of bicarbonate of soda, mix a couple of tablespoons in warm water and use it to wash out the vase, stem and hose. It will stop 'ghost' flavours when you change flavours. Otherwise if you've been smoking a strong flavour like cherry and switch to a more delicate flavour it can have a slight taste of the previous 1.
