Hard to keep lit

Hi

I have no problem keeping my regular tobacco lit, recently I bougth some black cherry. I find it really hard to keep it lit. Where am i going wrong?

Do you use a Czech tool to pack it down? Do you use your finger to pack it down?
Do you allow pockets of air whilst packing?
Do you check the draw before actually lighting it?
Do you actually keep your tobacco in a humidor?

I find spreading the tobacco on a sheet of paper for 10 mins before packing the pipe dries it a bit and helps with the burning and keeping it lit.

Having smoked a pipe for around a year, I have to say that keeping a bowl lit just does not happen for me.
I was not too pleased about it for some time and was analysing and questioning everything I was doing.
then a couple of months ago I did a job at an old chaps house and I got talking to him about his pipe, the guy had been smoking one for over 60 years and simply said "relighting is part of the game, if the leaf tastes good then it's worth the effort of setting it going again."
I have given up trying to be an effortless pipe smoker as I obviously am not one of the charmed ones. I still enjoy a good bowl, it just might take me twice as long to get to the bottom... But that's no bad thing in my eyes.

Sometimes it's just in the packing but add others have said to moist can also have an effect. Try packing your pipe then leaving it out for a few hours before you smoke it.

Which packing method do you use, Pandaboy - mot that I'm ready with any suggestions. Just interested to know.

3 pinch method. First pinch press in gently as a baby would. 2nd pinch pressed like a lady and 3rd like a man. Top up if you have a big bowl, seems to work well for me.

My automatic response when you said cherry was its too wet. When you pinch some together does it stay in a clump or break up? If it stays together its too moist.
