Well, as others have also said, it aint the weather for cigars if you have to smoke out side! So, ive decided to give this pipe business a go too

Put a little order in to smoke king and today i got:

Falcon coolway shape 13 briar pipe, which looks ace.
Pipe multi tool thing and cleaners.

Peterson Nutty Cut and Sherlock Holmes samples
Samuel Gawith Squadron Leader sample
Robert McConnel Maduro sample

All smell nice! Just going to get the little one to bed before i give it a test run

Let us know how you find it. The Falcon pipe was originally invented near my home town, in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In the mid 50's a sister company was started in London, and by the 1993 it was completely bought out by a UK manufacturer.

The McConnel Maduro is a good smoke, but IMO it doesn't taste much like cigar tobacco at all. I think it has a slight top sweetener on it.

Well all in all that was very pleasant. Tried the Sherlock Holmes first and enjoyed it, not as strong or full as i was expecting, but very nice none the less. Looking forward to working through the other samples i got, then I'll have to decide what sort of thing i want to try next! Recommendations are always welcome though, there are a scary amount of blends out there!

I do like a strong, full flavour in my cigars, with some sweetness too. Anything along those lines? By the sound of it the maduro may be something like that. By the way, which blends tend to be pure tobacco? I get the impression that a lot use flavourings of one kind or another.

The pipe itself is very nice, pleased with it. Easy to handle and fill, didnt have too much trouble at all for my first attempt.

Have you tried St Bruno Flake? It's available everywhere in the UK and it's a very good virginia blend that taste "natural". For a stronger blend I would suggest Samuel Gawith's Full Virginia Flake, and if you want something really strong and sweet, Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake and Dunhill Royal Yacht – try a sampler because these two are very special, not for everyone…

hello all i have made my own pipe mixture (a highly guarded secret!) but mainly i smoke gawthins dark birdseye it is strong but tasty give kriss a ring at www.thebackyshop.co.uk he is ace , my pipe is a falcon extra and to be honest i dont like it im thinking of buying a peterson dublin 9mm soon the 005 shape so i can look a bit like sherlock holmes! (but im not sure about the p lip the stem is fixed on that range so cant change it

i can't recommend the peterson pipes enough! my father in law gave me 2 of his antique petersons, i don't think i'd use any other brand!

I really do like the fact they sell it like this in small quantities to try before splashing out on a tin. There is so much out there it's great to get a good selection to try.

Some of those Peterson pipes look really nice, could be tempted to an upgrade if i carry on enjoying it. Do all their pipes use their 'system'?

No fortunatly! This system is a pipe juice provider. And the P-lip (special mouth piece) of Peterson's pipes is terrible.
I know some will disagree, but don't buy a Peterson! They're carved in very young briar, they taste very green, acidic, and it takes months to cake them.
I like the way they look, but I'm not tempted, they have a terrible reputation on the largest french/belgian/swiss pipe forum?

In this price range you can't go wrong with a Stanwell, a Savinelli, a Johs, a Wessex, etc.
I have two 60$ Stanwell and two 100$ Savinelli, they all smoke perfectly, with a good taste, without making juice. My "everyday" pipes.

If you're intested I'll give you a link to an estate pipe vendors who sells plenty of nice pipes under $50?

Unfortunately i have never had the pleasure of experiencing a pipe but all the talk on here has made me curious...I like the idea of pondering and contemplating life with a good pipe in tow!

hey james, i think this is all a matter of opinion and personal taste! peterson 'estate' pipes that have already been broken in can be had on ebay for a few quid! a new stem can be bought for a few quid also!
