  • new samples today!!!

on the recommendation of crusse, i checked out a site, smoke-king, which offered 5g samples of various pipe tobaccos! bingo! means i don't have to buy a whole 50g tin to try new pipe tobaccos! anyway, i ordered up 7 samples:
    peterson's nutty cut
    peterson's sherlock holmes
    peterson's summer breeze
    peterson's summer 2012
    peterson's reserve 2012
    dunhill early morning
    dunhill nightcap

ordered yesterday lunchtime, recieved this morning! this evening i tried a bowl of peterson's sherlock holmes! what a fantastic, beautiful smoke! easy burning, lovely aroma, beautiful flavours! it made me think of cold, autumn afternoons...... holloween at my friends house about 10years ago when we were all into occult stuff, burning incense etc...... great times, when everything, anything seemed possible! yes, this tobacco did all this and more! a great keeper! flavour ways, it was delicate..... oaky, malty, peaty, gingercake, assam/lapsang souschong tea, allspice, roasted chestnut.... god, i'm so happy now!! autumn in a tin!!! btw, i was sipping on a connemara cask strength irish whiskey.... added to the overall experience!

    highly recommended stuff indeed!

Well I quite like the sound of the Peterson Summertime 2012,Sweet Killarney & Luxury Blend.Squadron Leader from SG just because I've seen so many rave reviews and then I thought I might try the MacBaren Vanilla Cream flake.I haven't even gone through them all yet! I'll certainly have a go at posting anything I find mate but to be honest I think I'm still very much in my infancy in terms of the pipe and I'm still not sure that I'm packing or smoking it "right",if that makes sense. It's the first bunch I put in I think,I seem to put it in either too loose and I get a lot of air and a quick burn.Or else too firmly and then end up with a lot of relights and digging around..........I'll get there though,YouTube is proving a useful tool

well, the peterson's summertime 2012 smells heavenly, as does the 2012 reserve!! i'm pretty excited about trying the dunhill nightcap! again, i've read a lot of great reviews!!! sqaudron leader will be my next order i reckon! btw, i find this a really useful site:

like you, i'm pretty new to pipes, so i'm still learning! i was lucky enough my father in law smoked a pipe, he gave me an antique petersons to start with and plenty of advice! youtube however has proved really useful for me as well! i smoke the pipe much the same as a cigar, i never inhale and a every few puffs i retrohale to try and grab more flavours! i'm still learning how to pack right, though i think i've got the hang of it now!

whatever your thougts mate, post them! it's all useful for anyone starting out.....

Hi Alex, it's good to hear that you received good service from Smoke King. Their cigar prices are a bit high compared to other online retailers but I normally buy my pipe tobacco from them. That way I can stock up on my favourites and try new samples at the same time!

I haven't tried Peterson's Sherlock Holmes but from the way you describe it I think that I'll definitely add it to my list. Mick McQuaid is my favourite at the moment and I reckon that you'll really enjoy it. One of the great things about smoking a pipe is the huge range of tobaccos to try.

Packing and smoking a pipe properly takes practice and I certainly wouldn't consider myself an expert, but my technique is a lot better than when I first started. Regular little sips are the way to go - if you take big puffs like on a cigar the pipe will burn hot and will taste harsh.

Vortigan, if you want to try strong aromatics like MacBaren's Vanilla Flake then I'd suggest assigning a pipe to them, because they tend to ghost a pipe, meaning that the flavour of other tobaccos will be tainted. Personally I'm not a fan of strong aromatics so this isn't a problem for me, but it is worth keeping in mind if you want to try them.

Giving each other feedback on different tobaccos sounds like a great idea, maybe with time the pipe forum will become as active as the others!
                Chris
