Good choice of pipe - I've heard Stanwells are meant to be pretty decent, although haven't found out for myself!
I guess it's a bit late to suggest a first pipe for you, but I'd certainly recommend a Peterson as a good starter pipe. In my opinion at least, they're good value for money, widely available and smoke well, so you could do a lot worse! In fact, my first 2 pipes were Petersons.
Would be interesting to hear how you get on - takes a bit of perseverance to get used to smoking a pipe, but worth the effort...
