  • Thought I would give a pipe a go.

As a moderate cigar smoker (about 2/3 a week) and with not always having the time to put aside an hour, I thought I would give a pipe a go. I have a refurbished estate pipe coming from ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1507408798...84.m1497.l2649 and I have just purchased a tin of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe, I did not want to try any thing too strong to begin with.

Is there any other advice anyone could give me, any suggestions on tobacco, etc. I have heard that Squadron Leader is a nice mild smoke also.

    Ta, Andy

great decision mate, that Dublin looks like a beauty! Early Morning Pipe is a tobacco I'm keen on trying, do let us know what your thoughts are upon smoking it.

St. Bruno is a great mild and cool smoke to start off with, easy to get hold of (Tescos) and a good one to go to if you don't have anything else handy.

Happy smoking, I hope you enjoy the new hobby

Thanks Bert, I will let you know how I get on with the EMP. A bit of a risk buying an estate pipe from ebay as you never know what you are going to get. I am going to remove the mouth piece and sterilize it in some Milton before use. It looks like the seller has done the refurbishment very well.

Looks good. I bought an estate pipe fron ebay and it is brilliant. I started a thread on a good ebay seller in the pipe section. I like davidoff blue mix. Also Mcbatren cube is very nice. Look at my smoking shop for some good house blend baccy as well as some good old names! Enjoy the pipe.

I's second www.mysmokingshop.co.uk Simon is a great guy to deal with. I popped in last Saturday and there was another guy there aswell. His customer service was good too, esp as they had a load of customers and I was choosing a pipe in the same annoying way girls choose handbags (ie looking at them all and then returning to the first I looked at)

I have placed an order from Simon last night, he seems to have a very good range of products.

Andy, please let us know how you get on - I was just thinking the same thing as it happens. Have been wondering whether to give a pipe a go.

Corn cob would be my recommendation for a starter pipe, very cheap and smoke ok, most of the pipes under ?35 tend to be crap, worse still if you don't like it.

I have smoked 3 pipes of the Early Morning Pipe and I must say I really enjoy it. Have been getting my tobacco from www.mysmokingshop.co.uk as there are only supermarkets near me and Simon has a great range and his prices are pretty good.

I would agree with the Corn Cob pipe or there are cheap refurbished estate pipes on ebay, please see my earlier post and Pandyboy has also put a link on a seperate thread on a person he has dealt with.

If you are looking for a new pipe and an English pipe then these guys have a good reputation http://www.invictabriars.com/ prices range from ?35 up to a couple of hundred. (Very tempted at this time to buy one of thier classic range).

Just love the ritual of it.

Glad you like it. Beware, this kind of tobacco is quite addictive!

If you love EMP, you might try:
? Robert MacConnell: Oriental (lighter than EMP)
                        ? Samuel Gawith: Skiff Mixture
? McClelland: Grand Oriental Series, "Classic Samsun", "Drama Reserve", etc. [not imported in the UK, unfortunately]

Out of interest, is there a better style for outdoors? I am thinking Rhodesian - would this be suitable do you feel? Perhaps there is a shape designed for the outdoor smoker (fisherman)?

Hi Scruffy, I have finally given in and bought a Bulldog pipe from http://www.invictabriars.com/classic%20briarpipes.html The reason I got this is because I hope it will smoke cooler due to the bowl shape. I am not sure about outdoor smoking. I know that on a windy day the tobacco will burn quickly and I think quite hot as well, and this may be a problem. The other reason for a second pipe is that I have been told you should not smoke English blends and flavoured tobaccos in the same pipe as they may taint each other. I like the look of the Rhodesian pipe a lot and I think this may be a fine pipe to buy.

Others will hopefully be able to give advice on outdoor smoking and the pitfalls, this is a question I am keen to find out some more info on.

I have found the regular firm tamping keeps the speed of burn down when outside in the wind, I also think I perhaps load mine quite firmly too.
