I might add to what has been said before....

I would recommend looking at a pipe with plenty of wood in it. That is, with thick side walls.
With a new pipe, start with half loads for the first few smokes
Keep the bowl lower than the mouthpiece when you smoke.

Tobacco to choice, but as a general rule:
The lighter the colour, the hotter the burn (watch your tongue) (Gold Block, Gold Blend, etc)
The darker the colour, the cooler the burn

St Bruno is as dark as you want to go to start with (nice smoke and nice aroma)
You will find Condor (very dark) to be very sickly
A good middle of the road aromatic is Borkum Riff.

When you get used to it, one filling can last well over an hour. Just make as little smoke as possible.

My first pipe is a Dr. Plumb briar billiard, medium sized bowl, nice feel and draw. I'd definitely recommend one if you're looking for a decent pipe that will definitely give you a good first impression.

hey robb, welcome to the forum! nice to see another belfast member on here!!! i use an old peterson briar my father in law gave me! what would be your choice of tobacco? so far i've only bought petersons (old dublin, connoiseurs choice and luxury blend)!!! makes a nice change from cigars (especialy when the weather's too bad to stand outside for an hour)!!!

Hello and welcome. I have 5 pipes now. Started off with a cheap 2nds briar from a local shop. Would recommend dr plumb for a first pipe or a parker. Check out ebay for some good deals on petersons.

For tobacco I would go for a light blend to start with, Dunhill 965 is nice or Davidoff blue. Hope that helps.

Hi Alex, thanks for the welcome! A definite must-try is St. Bruno, a great one to start off smoking with and very easy on the palette. The most recent tobacco I sampled was MacBaren Vanilla Cream ( from Miss Moran's of course) and I was very pleased with it. A nice, smooth and cool smoke with delicious flavours. Haven't tried any Peterson baccies yet, I'm keen to try University Flake and Navy Flake I agree mate, there's something to pipe smoking that cigar smoking lacks!
