Mac Baren HH Old Dark Fired, it's a steamed flake English blend minus the Latakia. I like it, I could definitely see me smoking this as a daytime number.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

Dunhill early morning in my Royal Danish bent Apple, does absolutely nothin wrong. Lovely mild smoke, slightly zingy.
My day has not been totally crappy but the raining and pouring analogy certainly strikes true for a drain engineer who has spent a day standing in cold flood water and getting rained on for a large chunk of 12 hours.
Any way, the tobacco has unbelievable burn characteristics, I managed to smoke the full bowl with no relights..... Seriously this is a big achievement for me. I didn't even have to baby this, I put it down a couple times and it was still going after a couple minutes when I came back to it.
I think I have learned the lesson of how important tamping the fine pre light ash is to form an insulating layer.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

Gawith Bosun Cut Plug, I can only imagine that this is what it would be like to be transported back to the Victorian days as a gentleman. I couldn't smoke this everyday but its definitely an evening luxury smoke.
I paired it with the Gawith Lakeland Snuff and I'm glad I did because they match up beautifully, it brings something out in the snuff and really bumps the snuff experience up a notch.Licky Licky before Sticky Sticky. - Puff Scotty 22/03/14

Samuel Gawith 1792 Dark Flake - having tried Dunhill Flake and Samuel Gawith Full Virginia Flake I wanted to try something heavier.
The aroma of 1792 instantly reminded me of Condor flake with that heavy dense, slightly smokey, tarry smell - not what I was expecting from a Virginia. There is a vanilla hint to it more than the dried fig smell so prominent in FVF and DF.
Rubbed out, it lit quite well despite being a little moist, which required a few relights. I don't mind relights at all, it's all part of the smoking experience. Plus, the thrill of lighting matches has never left me since my childhood days of pyromania.
The smoke is thick and dense with a creamy rounded taste. Even when drawing hard the flavours and taste are good with zero tongue bite. If I were to compare it to a mix on a graphic equaliser I would say this has a good mix of frequencies suited to soul, whereas the Dunhill Flake has more top end as you might expect with a violin solo.
The nicotine kick is very prominent - perhaps the strongest pipe tobacco I've tried in terms of its kick, leaving me whirling for a moment or two until it wore off a bit.
Through the nose, the smoke is full but gentle with a typical VA twang, though not as pronounced as FVF.
Though I enjoyed this first bowl of 1792 the experience may be too much for a regular goto tobacco.
Edit - I was somehow of the understanding that 1792 was a Virginia based tobacco but it would appear to be Burley based with Virginia mixed in - hence the nicotine wham and the softer taste, and total absence of tongue bite.Last edited by mrcigar; 04-12-2013, 06:24 PM.

Mac Baren Navy Flake
Packaging is fabulous in a neat and tidy tin which fits beautifully into the pocket. Each flake is perfectly cut and packed with none of that dripping wet carry on associated with the Samuel Gawith flakes. with the MBNF you are buying tobacco, not water! The aroma on opening was a rich dried fruit steeped in rum and honey - very pleasing.
This is a Burley and Virginia blend with a mild flavour, producing a good amount of smoke. Despite an overall mildness, there is a edginess in the background (like a beer with a distinct hop note on the finish) that tends to threaten tongue bite if not careful.
The citrus taste of the Virginia is definitely present, softened by the Burley. The flavouring of rum and whatever else is added are not right up front, which is good because too much would detract from the natural tobacco taste. So subtle are these casings/toppings that unless knowing they were added I would never have immediately picked them up in the smoke. This might be a disappointment to some who are hoping to experience something remarkable in terms of rum flavour but personally I like my tobacco to taste like tobacco, not a Christmas pudding drenched in rum. Saying that, some reviewers have criticised it for being too cloying and synthetic so, as always, each palate is different and it will suit some and not others.
The burn is good with very few relights, even when folded and stuffed, and very little gurgle.
On the whole, this is a very nice tobacco and certainly deserves a place in any pipe smoker's tobacco stash.
Despite being Burly based the nicotine hit is not too heavy.

Dunhill Flake, folded and stuffed, paired with Kraken rum & coke. What a great combo.
