  • My US Non-Cuban import --> HUGE Fedex Duty/tax fees!

    Anyone else suffered from this?

Imported a couple of boxes of Nubs, a box of Oliva V DRs, and a box of 5 Vegas alpha torpedos (along side a foot locker humidor, a cigar oasis xl plus humidifier, and a digital hygrometer), and have landed myself a ?255 bill to be paid...! Total value of the items came to $670 including delivery (which was $100 due to the huge humidor). It's a pain, but even including this ridiculous duty bill the cigars are cheaper than you can get here, it just takes some of the fun out of what I thought could be cheap and easy everyday smokes.

I thought I was in the clear when I received my package from fedex without any dramas (Parcelforce etc. hold the package to ransom until everything is paid), but apparently Fedex let you think you got away with it and then a week or two later - BAM!

What's my plan of action from here guys? Dispute the amount of tax? Pay it outright? Not pay it at all (I've already read this can get messy)?

    Imports

I am not sure but I think we will be unable to discuss this topic any further as HMRC would take a pretty stern view of folks talking about such stuff on line.

Yep, you NEED to pay your duties/tax...

See link below that tells you how to do so...

Just had the same, paid 200% tax, but still worked out cheaper. More hassle than it's really worth though.

I had a similar experience with a delivery from the US via Fedex.

I carefully checked the taxes they had paid on my behalf & found they had paid tobacco duty on the total weight of the package ie to include the box & all packaging. As the actual weight of cigars inside the pass-the-parcel was only half the total, the duty which should actually have been paid was only half, and this reduced the amount of VAT too, as VAT is payable on the total cost including item, shipping & handling AND all other taxes & duties.

I refused to pa Fedex the amount demanded, despite them appointing debt collectors (who can't legally do anything if told the amount in question is in dispute).

I got there in the end & the savings were certainly worth the effort (although the cigars weren't: Macanudos!)
