  • Padron family reserve review

Here is my review for anyone considering this cigar.
Be easy on me since its the first time reviewing a cigar on paper
My review of the Padron Family reserve top rated cigar of the year cigaraficionado 2009.
First all I have always been a fan of the Padron line of Cigars. So it was very exciting to see the the Family Reserve Maduro 45 was named cigar of the year by cigaraficionado. During this review however I will try not to show any preferential treatment towards Padron but more rather judge the cigar on an overall ranking using the standard 100 point ranking system.
    Appearance-The parejo pressed cigars(6 x 52 – Toro vitolla)
come in Tidy boxes of ten. The Maduro wrapper on my speciman happened to be a bit lighter in shade to most other Maduros I’ve smoked in the past. The smooth wrapper was flawless and while it did not glisten with oils and it had just the right amount of moisture while being firm to the touch. I would rate the appearance a solid 13 of the possible 15 points.
Flavor- While toasting the foot of the cigar there was a very enticing aroma of burning Cedar. As I took my first few draws I was a little worried I was expecting too much from the cigar. Very quickly my worries went away as copious amounts of thick blue-grayish smoke went into the air and my taste buds encountered a robust flavor of nuts, cedar and subtle flavors of coffee. A very relaxing cigar that’s not overwhelming. As I finished the initial third of cigar the first thing I noticed was the lack of any harshness. Just pure enjoyment as the flavors got more complex. The last 2 thirds of the smoke was just as enjoyable as I noticed myself rolling the smoke out of my mouth. There was a nice spiciness tingle on the tongue but overall smoothness. I smoked it until my fingers were hot. Overall taste score I gave it a 25. It would be interesting to see how well these age.
Smoking Characteristics-Right from the beginning the cigar had a easy draw and burnt effortlessly. It had a nice even burn throughout with an attractive nice grey ash. Although the ash did not hold well it did not affect flavor or temperature much. Score 23 out of 25.
Overall Impression-A very nicely made cigar with leafs as old as 10 years. Comes in both a natural and a maduro wrapper. I had the pleasure of smoking the maduro and only wished it came in a smaller size to make it more of an repetitive smoke instead of reserved for special occasions. I was very impressed overall and give great credit to Jorge Padron for coming out with another fine cigar for us to enjoy.
    Impression score 34

    Scores 95 overall

I hope you enjoyed the review and get out there and try one

Surely that is a typo, you do not mean 34 out of 95, do you?

"In Italy for 30 years under the Borgias they had warfare, terror, murder and bloodshed, but they produced Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, and the Renaissance. In Switzerland they had brotherly love, they had 500 years of democracy and peace, and what did that produce? The cuckoo clock!"

That is what I get for reading things in a rush and not engaging my oh so limited brain. Good review though. You clearly loved it. Jimmeh and I smoked it at Ten Manchester Street and could not understand why it was so well regarded. I must try it again.

Did you hear that Jimmeh? Give me your spare one! LOL

Although I was very pleased with the cigar and gave it a 95 I have had better and was a bit surprised it made cigar of the year CA. But I guess its a matter of taste and preference. Thats what makes them unique to each individual. I would definitely talk Jimmeh out of his spare one.

                Hmmm...

I happen to love this 'gar. Of course, like the wingmeister, I also am partial to virtually all things Padr?n.

In all honesty; however, I still prefer the 1926 Maduro. That and the Siglo VI are the two best stogies I've smoked to date.

                  Very much Tom.

I've one 1964 Family Reserve gifted by Mr Rokkit which I'm really looking forward to smoking, and which might just mean taking this afternoon off. Oddly, I was also going to use this cigar to try writing my first proper review. But now that you've done such an excellent job, I can consider myself excused.

I've also two each of the Padone Series Delicias Maduro, 1964 Anniversary Series Coronas and 1926 Anniversary Series No2 Torps .... so maybe I'll do a review on one o' them ..... but not yet!
If you want to, you can.
And, if you can, you must!

Good review Wingman. How long have you had it.
I've had two in my humi for about three months bought in a box split.
I may have one next weekend at the first bike rally of the year.
                    Come on weather, be good!
Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

I'm looking forward to one of your cigar reviews. Very nice selection you have....

Satch, I've had the family reserves for about 6 weeks in my humidor @ a constant 65%. I hope you enjoy the one you have

Smoked my share of these....all were amazing with the exception of 2 of them, which were only average imo. Even the natural wrapper is excellent. As good as the maduro imo.

good review, it's these that influence what i try. being new to cigars it can be a bit daunting deciding what to smoke.
