Here is my review for anyone considering this cigar.
Be easy on me since its the first time reviewing a cigar on paper
My review of the Padron Family reserve top rated cigar of the year cigaraficionado 2009.
First all I have always been a fan of the Padron line of Cigars. So it was very exciting to see the the Family Reserve Maduro 45 was named cigar of the year by cigaraficionado. During this review however I will try not to show any preferential treatment towards Padron but more rather judge the cigar on an overall ranking using the standard 100 point ranking system.
Appearance-The parejo pressed cigars(6 x 52 – Toro vitolla)
come in Tidy boxes of ten. The Maduro wrapper on my speciman happened to be a bit lighter in shade to most other Maduros I’ve smoked in the past. The smooth wrapper was flawless and while it did not glisten with oils and it had just the right amount of moisture while being firm to the touch. I would rate the appearance a solid 13 of the possible 15 points.
Flavor- While toasting the foot of the cigar there was a very enticing aroma of burning Cedar. As I took my first few draws I was a little worried I was expecting too much from the cigar. Very quickly my worries went away as copious amounts of thick blue-grayish smoke went into the air and my taste buds encountered a robust flavor of nuts, cedar and subtle flavors of coffee. A very relaxing cigar that’s not overwhelming. As I finished the initial third of cigar the first thing I noticed was the lack of any harshness. Just pure enjoyment as the flavors got more complex. The last 2 thirds of the smoke was just as enjoyable as I noticed myself rolling the smoke out of my mouth. There was a nice spiciness tingle on the tongue but overall smoothness. I smoked it until my fingers were hot. Overall taste score I gave it a 25. It would be interesting to see how well these age.
Smoking Characteristics-Right from the beginning the cigar had a easy draw and burnt effortlessly. It had a nice even burn throughout with an attractive nice grey ash. Although the ash did not hold well it did not affect flavor or temperature much. Score 23 out of 25.
Overall Impression-A very nicely made cigar with leafs as old as 10 years. Comes in both a natural and a maduro wrapper. I had the pleasure of smoking the maduro and only wished it came in a smaller size to make it more of an repetitive smoke instead of reserved for special occasions. I was very impressed overall and give great credit to Jorge Padron for coming out with another fine cigar for us to enjoy.
Impression score 34
Scores 95 overall
