  • Cain killer

To my knowledge several people on here purchased the Cain sampler pack from one of our US brethren and they started to arrive over the last couple of weeks. I was waiting for one of these people to start a thread about it as I certainly have some comments on this new cigar but no thread has been started that I have come across. I shall therefore kick things off.....

Jimmeh received four sticks a short while ago, prior to the sampler packs arriving. After the auction at the Boisdale earlier this week I was in the sort of mood that I wanted to plunge something pointy through Jimmeh's chest, he procrastinated so much during the auction we lost out on everything. To make amends he pulled out a couple of the corojo Cains. I, not wanting to be a complete grump thrust an Alec Bradley Trilogy back at him but that is a topic for another time.

We both lit up the Cains. Now Jimmeh likes his strong cigars. I can take or leave a strong cigar, as long as it is at least medium in strength then I am happy, it is more about flavour and feel in the mouth for me, anyway I digress. The first inch or so of this cigar was "full on" but pleasant. Interesting flavour for an NC, strong spices and powerful.

After the first inch though it was like a spice war had been declared. This thing was shockingly strong with stinging spice flavours. For reference I have never had a cigar that was overpowering. Bolivar PB, Partagas P1, Cohiba Robustos or whatever, I have never had anything that was truly overpowering. Too strong for my palette maybe, but only in as much as it overpowered the flavour, not in as much as it was too much to take. The Cain however is a different story. This thing gave me indigestion! When, as I did on a couple of occasions, I took a really solid draw on the cigar I found myself screwing up my face as there was just too much sensory input to process.

I will point out that I was smoking on an empty stomach. I always smoke on an empty stomach though, since I gave up food a couple of years ago. This would be interesting and more suitable to smoke after a heavy meal with lots of red meat and wine.

Another observation. Whilst not a small cigar in any way, this was the smallest of the Cain range. I like a large gauge cigar but this was the first time I have not had the thought cross my mind that I wonder if I would prefer a larger version. I actually thought a shorter version would be in order.

Did I hate this cigar? No. Did I love it? Hmmm, no. Did I find it an interesting and slightly shocking experience? Yes. Do I want more? Yes, but smoked in a particular situation and sparingly.

As I said, Jimmeh likes he strong cigars and he loved this, but I will let him tell you his thoughts.

I am most interested to hear the thoughts of others. I have never understood people saying a cigar is too strong, maybe now I do, but bring it on anyway! LOL

Mine are spending some 'me time' in the NC-a-dor before I try them, but I'm not surprised it resembled a swift kick to the knackers given that it's 100% ligero. I'll be interested how people get on with them after a meal.
The 'double toro' certainly looks a formidable beast.

Yep, I jumped on the Cain bandwagon after having sampled a Double Toro Maduro at my favorite cigar tavern. Absolutely loved it. Big, brawny, deep, rich, tasty. Was told that the Habano was even better but was very hard to come by. So I was excited to get my sampler.

Sorry, but although quite good, the Habano has nothing on the Maduro.

And I disagree about the kick-ass, no empty stomach, not for the faint of heart warnings. I found the Maduro especially to be very full-flavored, but not necessarily full-bodied. No, it's not a beginner's cigar. But consider that I inhale everything (yes, yes, I know - a cardinal cigar sin) and that the Cain was not one of the two cigars that have ever kicked my butt. Just a very tasty, satisfying smoke.

BTW, the smaller (not Double Toro) Cains are extremely pleasant. So if you have any "Ooh, ooh my butt is going to get kicked" concerns, try one of the little fellows first.

        migh too sense...

I love me some Cains and blew threw the sampler I got in a few days.

The 100% Ligero thing is BS. It is marketed as 100%, but it is actually 72% Ligero.

Yeah? That's a pretty precise figure-I'd be interested where you heard that?

[EDIT] I notice on the Cain site they actually state: "Still we must carefully arrange these Ligeros with other tobaccos for a true burn. The other tobaccos make no significant contribution to flavor." Gits! Still intrigued by the 72% though.

Now I'm trying to work out what fraction 72% is...

It is 8/11. I'm shutting up now. (Near enough)

Good ole Sam sits down and talks about his latest creation Cain and an update on the NUB Miami.

Sam Leccia mentions it's not 100% ligero at 1:45 on the video on that page as well, and the other tobaccos used.

Do they have a trades descriptions act in the US? LOL

I have a horrid feeling everybody is going to say they find these mild and an easy smoke thus making me look like a big girls blouse, maybe I should have smoked another one before I put metaphorical pen to paper, hmm...

I like this cigar they are not overly strong but have a great flavor that if I was to guess will mature very nicely. They are marketing this cigar as a powerhouse and I didnt find it that way just a good smoke

God I meant to go back and update this thread but I forgot!

I have smoked two more of the Cain range since I wrote the original article. Both turned out very pleasant. The most recent was the limited edition "F" and I enjoyed it thoroughly but it did give me indigestion, most odd.

I forget what the previous Cain I had was but I enjoyed it. I guess my first one was smoked in the wrong mood or maybe a bad stick.

I had a similar experience. My first one was terrible. My last one was the "F" and it was great.
