Davidoff sticks... any good?

12 hehe. I have some of those 2000 with a year on, I guess I'll have to wait a while to try them. I can't comment on them for now. They do look and smell intriguing, I have high hopes. I think I'm going to like them in the same way I appreciate very clean highland whisky. I love the full on NC's and Cubans but I also really love the more subtle stuff like some HdM and Cohiba. Maybe I should smoke one tomorrow and report back.

Haha! No need to wait, chico Tomboy. Unlike puros, NCs are ready to go from the start. Now some around here might argue this point, but from my own experience, I find little to no benefit from aging NCs - probably because there are ready to go from the start - so waiting several years to enjoy seems crazy to me.

Have been a bit curious about Davidoff sticks since the start... given their price point I always got the impression they were a real treat. Reviews seem to say the same. Went ahead and bought a Robusto sample set online. Let's hope I'm not disappointed.

I had a Nicaragua Toro and I thought it was superb, one of the best sticks I've ever tried.

I don't like the standard Davidoff range so I was very surprised. The Nic was very smooth, subtle flavours, more like a CC than NC I would say.

I've heard good things about the 2000 line but yet to try one.

I've also been curious to try them, but it seems they're not a high priority... Perhaps when I'm done trying most Cubans!

I've been doing a bit of digging on Davidoff since I bought the sampler packs.

Obviously Davidoff are considered by many to be the pinicle of the cigar world. Obviously debatable.

Many tend not to buy Davidoff because of the price point. For the same cost or less you can buy some very good Cuban's.

Well after following a couple of links from an article on sweet tipped cigars, I came across some info. It seems that like most companies of note in the world, Davidoff produce a cigars but sell them as different brands.

These are:

La Fontana
Baccarat.

If you find any of these branded cigars, you are technically buying a Nicaraguan Davidoff.

Over the years I have tried a few Davidoffs but I hadn't smoked any for quite a while until I was given some to try last year and my thoughts were:

1 - The Short Perfecto - beautifully rolled and a very enjoyable and mild smoke but not as mild as I remember Dominican Davidoffs of old being. Very good cigar and would definitely smoke again.
2 - Nicaraguan Short Corona - again, very well rolled and a totally different taste profile but I still enjoyed it in this short format. Not my first choice but would happily spark one up in the future.
3 - Nicaraguan Robusto - quality of rolling was again superb but for me, the taste profile in this larger format became unpleasant so wouldn't smoke one again
4 - Puro D'Oro Magnifico - the only magnifico things about this cigar were the price and the quality of the roll. Very dark, almost maduro wrapper, really peppery and spicy taste which I found extremely unpleasant to such an extent I only smoked the first third of it.
5 - Millenium Blend Robusto - yet again a beautifully constructed cigar with a fabulous draw (as they all have) but trying this one just a couple of days after the Puro D'Oro I was filled with trepidation! However this was a really nice smoke and probably best described as a fuller bodied version of the standard Davidoff Dominican line and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I would definitely smoke these again.

Overall them, they seem to be beautifully constructed and the different blends are significantly different from one another so then it comes down to personal taste. I will readily admit that my first love is (and always has been) Cubans and to echo what Rob said above, I would find it very difficult to justify the price of these compared to their Cuban counterparts - Millenium Blend Robusto at c. ?20 a stick, Puro D'oro c. ?25 compared with Hoyo de Monterrey Epi 2 at around ?13.50 and Epicure Especial at around ?17 per stick. For an extra ?1 a cigar you could have a Grand Epicure LE rather than the Puro D'Oro. See what I mean!
