Good Evening Gents & Ladies

So, for my big 3-0 Birthday, I had a little special cigar lined up, well a tin of 3, and they were not little at all. I have to ask as my initial thoughts are these beautiful cigars must be fresh off the boat as the only organoleptics I could pick up from this cigar were mainly earth and where I had cut the cigar as I always do with an Xi3 cutter, just before the shoulders. The cap of the cigar was covered in black which I assume to be tar by about halfway through meaning I had to put this cigar down. This is the first time I have had this so either I have been very lucky thus far or something is not right?!

All opinions and advice is most welcome.

First advice is usually to to age for a year before smoking but thats for flavour/taste not because of tar build up. What humidity is your humidor?

Can't put them down for a year...

Hi Sligub, appreciate your help, thank you. My humidor is at a solid 69% RH with a temperature of 16-18 degrees Celsius. The RH is 'controlled' by using the 69% Boveda Packs.

Groundhog - These were bought from Cgars Ltd in a rather beautiful Fuente Fuente Opus X 1992 Ch?teau de la reserva tin. Bought 2 months ago for my 30th with an idea to have the other two for special occasions....

I store almost all my cigars drier than that, I would maybe think about dropping to 65% (I personally use 65 for most of my NC and 60 for my CC and my Opus). The other option is to try dry boxing before you smoke but that only really drys the wrapper and maybe the binder.

I would hate to think that the issues being had by myself would blight your order. Do your ordered Fuente Fuente Opus X look like these per chance?

I find I get a much better burn at 60%, It's personal choice though so worth trying various levels and see what you like.

Now you have got my confused. I have read about storing cigars at 60 or 65 but not smoking them. I will have to try and find where it was suggested. I am sure it said a second humidor was required set at 72 to 80 to prepare them for smoking as the lower humidity was just for aging them.

I find you get a better burn, less draw problems and less "bitter" flavour at 60-65% I've never heard of using 72-80 as a smokable range.
