  • At long last some Hoyo Particulares

I have wanted to try this cigar for an age but finally circumstances have allowed it to happen. It is a box split with a few others with a specific intention in mind but I am keeping silent on that for the moment. Here are some pics of the box of five Hoyo Particulares I received on Saturday. The box is from 2002 and the cigars appear LOVELY but that does not come across in my bad pics.

I wouldnt say they smelt like new cigars - they smelled AGED- but they are in the condition of when they were rolled at the factory.

                  Hi T

I seem to recall you picked up some of the equivalent sized Sanchos a little while back. I'd be interested to hear how these compare when you get around to sampling one.

I keep getting to the point where I'm hovering over the 'Click to buy' button for these (and the Monte A's), but I've found little feedback around (good or bad) from reliable sources, on how they rate 'side-by-side'. Any feedback (particularly on the taste profile) would be most welcome

                  Cheers
                  El Cat

El Catadore ask me again in a weeks time and I can tell you more, at least regarding the Particulares, but you are correct in recalling that I purchased a 10+ year old box of Sancho Panza Sanchos when I stumbled upon them on offer. I have a thing about complete boxes and so I still have not started them but it did give me an excuse to smoke the one loose Sanchos I did have in my humi. I wanted a reason to get shot of it anyway as the size makes them awkward to store in any of my better wooden humidors that are reserve for Cubans.

Over the years I have smoked a few Monty A's (sadly not enough, far far too expensive) and a good few Sanchos. The Monty A is a great medium strength cigar but HAS to be smoked ultra slow. The one I enjoyed the most I felt like I was taking the "piss" in smoking so slowly but it faithfully kept alight and was rewarding with flavour but not strength. The Sanches I have smoked have ranged from light to medium. The older the stick you smoke the less of the characteristic Sancho Panza "earthiness" they exhibit. It is this flavour characteristic that I believe makes this brand such an acquired taste and niche brand.

I recently had a Sancho Panza Belicoso from a 10 year old cabinet and this had zero of the "earthiness" flavour and was a LOVELY medium smoke with plenty of flavour. If my Sanchos exhibit the same change in flavour I will be a very happy person but I have to make myself smoke one to find out, LOL.

When I smoke the Particulares I will know where amongst the four "A" size cigars I know about it comes and if I should think of buying more. After my recent experience of being repeatedly disappointed in the Hoyo DC I have some doubts it will blow me away, I hope it does though.

Until a certain person changes his mind and lets me acquire a Cohiba "A" from him I will not be able to pass any judgement on it, but they are rare as rocking horse poo.

                    T.

Thanks for that, I'll look forward to hearing how you get on with them.

I'd like to try this size but don't want to buy too many (similar storage issues), so I'd prefer to go with the highest regarded.

Good info on the Sanchos by the way. The 'aged' variation sounds more to my taste, and as the box I'm looking at is from 2000, I think it might fit the bill quite nicely.
I've got till the end of the month before I need to decide (they're for a special event) so unless the Hoyo is an improvement, the sancho is looking a distinct possibility. I'll tap you up for a definitive answer at the Behike shin-dig assuming you've smoked one by then.

Jesus! (or replace with the 'oath' of your chosen religious persuasion), 'Dinner of the Century' cigars? I didn't know you could still get 'em from anywhere. Have you considered 'extortion with menaces'?

No, the 2003 Series A Humidor I think, but not sure on that.

Ooops, yes, I stand corrected, you hit the nail on the head the first time, the ones I have my eye on are from the 1994 - Dinner of the Century release.
