Do what shops do and add an air curtain above the vent in this case?

Or you could put a hearing element in the duct to heat up the air a little

        Build Day 3

Another day of good progress creating my heavenly smoking den.....ahem, I mean MLW Summerhouse

Final timbers added to finish off the main structure - timbers screwed down and the the spacing for the roof purlins is ready....

Main timber purlins going in and with some careful placement the structure becomes self supporting, whilst the final positioning and joining is made

After some jiggery pokery, the frame was finally finished, adjustments made and finally all supporting timbers screwed into place - took us both around two hours to get this section done right.

On to securing the boards - I would most definitely recommend using a good quality nail gun to secure the boards, and work around the periphery of the roof to start to get your spacing between the boards correct.

Ok time to take a break, weather is closing in, and we have around 70% of the roof complete - covered with tarpaulin, (secured with blocks nailed through the tarp', will see if its still there in the morning) should keep the worst of the weather out. If the weather is kind to us tomorrow, we should have her weather tight

Looking good. Is the roof insulated too or are shingles / felt going straight on the boards?

Once the roof boards are in place, the whole structure gets treated with Barrettine and the building will then be weather tight. Once the weather becomes milder, kinder/less windy, I will install 30mm insulation board on the roof, then add shingles on top to finish.

I will then get the electrician back in to install the power sockets and garden/summerhouse lighting. For the floor inside we will also add 30mm as an extra layer before the floor boards go in - final construction job.

The building is located in the southerly corner of the garden, and is naturally sheltered by hedgerow/trees. The building aspect faces north - most of our worst weather comes from a SW or Westerly direction - only the floor and roof will be insulated as the position is shaded during summer and protected during winter months.
I was going to use the building for 9 months and gauge if further insulation is going to be needed or not. I do have plans to install a 6 inch ghost fan for venting cigar smoke in SE corner of building. Possibly considering, a slimline all-in-one air con (9000 btu) unit, which would go in on the NE wall below front facing window - but will make do with a portable oil powered radiator to start with. And finally, an air purifier will also be used in the summerhouse - sized appropriately for the room.

Hopefully, it should be cool in the summer and quite snug during winter

Sounds very well organised indeed. It's blustery AF here today. So hope nothing suffers along the way.

The tarpaulin kept the rain off last night, and this morning the wind is trying to do a good job of blowing the tarpaulin away, but our fixing method of wooden battens over the tarp nailed into the structure appears to be holding for now

Thanks for the explanation Alan. What sort of installation board is it? If celotex, like the floor then I think you will need 12mm osb on top of the insulation, screwed through into the rafters and then shingles on top.

Yes I am using Celotex - in my excitement I had forgotten to mention the osb board on top before the shingles go on - yes you are correct

Build Day 4 - Weather Tight

Well the building protection mercifully stood up to the westerly gales today - the weather although blustery was dry - we even managed a bit of blue skies. The last two sections for the roof going on nicely....

We tossed a coin as to who was brave enough to go up top in these gales for the final boards - I won

Roof done, now to hang the doors and fit the locks - fitted like a glove, with very little adjustment, I was amazed!

And here she is - main construction build complete - weather tight for now - so pleased with how it's all come together so far.....Will keep you posted how the final challenges work out.
