First - Brillant pick ups, mate! I've got a few of the Party Unvarnished 898s that I'm saving for a special occasion but never been able to get a box, let alone one with that much age, nicely done! The old RA898s are spectacular too - my half remaining box of '02s are nothing short of sensational. That said - I'd be curious to hear how the 98s and 01s taste, because I've had a few of each from these years and they weren't as fantastic as the 02s to my taste.
And yeah - they always had both unvarnished and varnished 898s for Partagas until the UV went away in one of the great Habanos purges in the 2000s. Two different sizes, two different flavour profiles. The UV has been more earthy, white peppery cigar to me, while the Varnished is the more well-rounded crowd pleaser. Kind of like comparing the Bolivar Inmensas or BGM to the Bolivar Lonsdale.
I love the new RA 898 German RE's - they definitely need some more time to round out but some great flavours off the starting blocks. They will do quite well in a few years. I'm going to let mine sit for 5 years at least before cracking on.

Great haul Butters, nice to see you have found time from work to find these. Loved the old RA 898's, have two cabs of the German RE but only tried one with friends, I'll try another in 3yrs. Probably best 5-10yrs.
