One way of regulating the humidity is to Humidify the whole cupboard ?10 worth of kitty litter should do the trick

10 quid here in Canuckistan can buy around 16 pounds of kitty litter.

I've never messed with the kitty litter thing - didn't seem proper for fine puros. But apparently there are some who do.

So let me get this straight, the crystals are to increase (and maintain) the humidity in the unit and the kitty litter absorbs excess moisture and reverses the process in dry conditions, correct?

BB. You were stumbling around the world when we had the Kitty Litter expose with VD-Guy and the others.

Kitty Litter is an entropic orientation of Calcium Silicate. It retains moisture but gives it off much slower. It's satisfied with the moisture it holds onto. Silicon Dioxide (silica gel) is also entropically orientated to absorb 40-80% of humidity. But if re-orientated with heating, polarisation, etc, it can be fine tuned to 65 or 70 or whatever. This is what beads are and this is the majority component of gels.

Calcium silicate itself is not a good humidity solution because of its drastic changes when running out of water. You can use it, sure. But you have to monitor it very closely for sudden changes if they occur. You also have to fine tune the quantity in the humidity because it cannot be re-orientated like Silicon Dioxide can be.
But coupled with a silicon dioxide based humidity solution, it should be fine. I would just use beads myself. $50 one time use and I never have to pay again...

Thanks BOTL, it all seems to work fine, been using this cupboard for several years now to house my progression through my descent into CAD, a friend has got some beads he is going to send me, and i will incorporate them into the units, i think i am just very lucky to live in a house that is not subject to massive changes in temperature or humidity, plus the cupboard is slap bang in the middle of the house, 9 inch adjoining wall to the back insulated stud walls iether side and 3 doors each way between the humi and the outside world.

Very very nice Jabba, like it a lot , I'm a chippy myself and I reckon the top unit for singles would look great with a pair of hinged shelving units or another set of shelves in front which concertina out flat .
Hope I'm not sticking my nose in too much I don't take work advice too well myself .
