My mistake, Chris. I gave too extreme of an example. Probably works better if you're comparing more recent ones:

If i'm offered a box of Montecristo 2s from 2008 from you and they turn out to be from 2012, we can work something out.
If you were the middle man and your source is supposed to stay hidden, it's more difficult.
The absolute easiest thing to do is to just void the transaction and return the parties their initial offers (one: money. the other: cigars).
It saves any potential troubles that I can see many of... The first of which is to figure out the value of the difference - so subjective i'd rather trade beaver pelts...

I agree he should get the refund as the 2013 jars are still available at around ?250 inc post if you can find them so ?300+ paid seems an awful lot to pay for something that is still available at LCDH

But isn't that the point of auctions? I know there is a mistake made in terms of dates, but auction atmospheres can get the better of people sometimes and inflates the price that is readily available in a retail environment.

I'm gutted really, it's a great looking bit of kit & I'm quite sure the cigars would've been great too.
I doth my cap to Mitchell though, a true professional, the customer service of C.Gars is something to set the bar to.
Onwards & upwards, once I get the funds back, it's another purchase to be had!! Just don't tell mrs W

To be honest from someone who commented earlier about how they check the authenticity of every lot for auction he is left with some egg on his face, from the seal alone (which is upside down and in the wrong place) You can state that this box is after 2011 so not really any excuse. I thought since he owns a LCDH that stocks these jars in the UK he could have offered you one at a discount to compensate you. You could take your money and buy one from the LCDH in teddington he might even have some from 2009 knocking about.

Sorry to hear all this bud.... I'm taking this as further evidence that I should stay away for auctions unless I am being advised by a trusted knowledgeable BOTL or I significantly increase my own knowledge.

I had a bit of an email hockey session with Mitchell over the outcome, I did ask to keep the jar & get compensated either through money or cigars. He was very professional & declined, he was quite adamant it was keep as is or return. I tried!!
Overall though, it's part of the learning curve, my first experience of an online auction - probably my last too! The outcome is I get my money back, with the return shipping costs, so for me, win/win - sort of..
I'll put the funds into a box purchase, though I may have a look around for a jar because they do look great.

You might want to buy a nice jar from ebay and then get a box of cigars from a cheap source to match. It wouldn't be a collectors item but if like me you only want it for its original purpose of storing your smokes ready for smoking then it might be worth a try.

OK, shit happens, mistakes get made. Wayne you'll be getting your dosh back call that a good result.

Martyn is correct, HU Noellas jars aren't exactly rare, and I doubt most people would be able to tell the difference between a 2009 and 2014 anyway. Simply locate some vendors that have them, ask them the date codes and you may be happily surprised with what you get.

The jar is packaged up, ready to go. I've paid to get it back to them by 1pm tomorrow.
Like you said Tippexx, shit happens, I understand that things could get missed, I imagine they were very busy in the build up to the auction. Mitchell was very understanding, though he wouldn't give in when I said I'd keep the jar but, with compensation of cash or cigars!!
It was my first auction, a bit of an impulse buy if I'm honest, chalked up as an experience. The outcome is good, no-one has lost as such..
Now once the funds have been refunded, a quick browse to see if I pick up something before the end of the year..
