OK, it's a bit gimmicky, but I thought I'd try Cigar Aficionado's Top 25 for 2013 - couldn't find 2014's, so presumably not out yet. So these arrived today.

Unsurprisingly for a publication aiming for an American audience, there are very few 'inaccessible' Cubans (just 3). There are also a few substitutes where lines have changed.

I've concluded I'm never going to possess finely tuned taste buds, but figured it would be interesting to compare my experiences with 'experts'. While I believe everyone's personal taste should be respected, recommendations are always valuable.

Another package today as well - 2 x 5 Partagas E 2s (Apr 13), an HdM Epi 2 and PL Encanto. Bowled over by an E 2 a few weeks back (and by Partagas in general), and there seems to be a lot of love on here for the Epi 2 and PL, so figured I'll try them.

I was 'caught out' by my wife who has noted the steady stream of packages recently. She even said 'this is a bit obsessive, isn't it?' So, this is probably the last for a while .....???

I've got a box of the Romeos, a very nice smoke, where was it in the top 25?

Might take a while to get through them. Some are huge and I don't often get more than an hour! They'll be publishing the Top 25 for 2015 before I'm finished with this lot.

Been meaning to ask - you said you know someone at HMS Cambria? I'm going to Traf Night there tonight. I've got PMs now so you could send me the name? (thanks to PeeJay for kindly nudging the process on a bit).

No.25 - it was actually a tubo which came 25th, but this is the closest substitute. Looking forward to this one because I'm developing a liking for the Cuban RyJ and I'd like to see how they compare and differ.

Good on you, se?or underthecoversbrother. Always good to try sticks and puros that others endorse....helps get a handle on professional reviewers you agree and disagree with.

As you may already know, over the years there has been a lot of controversy over CA's top 25, and I count myself among them. So don't be hard on yourself if you don't enjoy some of the top sticks. On the other hand, they often get the top choices correct, in terms of what I like.

So what did they send in place of the no. 1 (Monty #2) and no. 5 (Behike 54)?

Thanks for the advice. I do believe 'each to their own'. If I don't like something, I don't like it. Of course, you're right, it would be impossible to navigate the world of cigars as a newcomer without experts, friends, etc., to help and it gets easier when you find reviewers you can trust.

They just don't send anything at all instead of the Cubans, so I bought singles to finish the set.

Got to say as one newbie to another I have not agreed with a single professional review.
I have, however agreed with most peer reviews. I.E. The ones on here

For further entertainment watch a few video reviews whilst smoking the same cigar. Sometimes they can help to identify that elusive flavour you just can't pin down.

Haha! And other times cause you to think - Hmmm? I wonder what the hell they're smoking? It can't be the same as mine.
