American Made Cuban Brands

So I got confirmation of an order today to find that I'll be getting some unexpected stuff free. Essentially it is a sampler made up or Cohiba, Partigas, Montecristo and other Cuban brands but this parcel is from America. Are these companies making cigars in America using American tobacco or are they unaffiliated? I find it odd that they can do this, it must be related to the trade embargo topic that is already being discussed but I'd like to know exactly what is going on with these. I'm not expecting Cuban quality, in fact I'm not expecting much at all. Seems dodgy to me.
Here's an example of what is on offer:

When the revolution took place, brands all started moving out. this was followed by the rights to the names These include Partagas, Bacardi, RyJ, Punch, etc. As they started to amalgamate into 'general cigar', they started taking more names: cohiba, La Gloria Cubana, etc.
Mostly all the Cuban brands have non-cuban equivalents.

I personally would stay away. Stick to Fuente, La Aurora, and La Flor Dominicana

All are brands that don't need naming to sell (which, inadvertently created a name for themselves!). Non-Cuban Davidoff are quite good, though. I enjoy them out of all the Non-Cubans out there.

They have nothing to do with their cuban namesakes and are completely different organisations

As Jeremy said they were all originally cuban and the owners relocated after the revolution. I may be wrong but I think that the cuban government stopped using the brand names after the revolution, but starting using them again after things weren't really working out, so you could argue whoever was filling Habanos' role back then actually ripped off the now NC brands (although not in every case, most notably Cohiba)

I don't know why we don't get the NC brands here, it may be because they're not very good, or maybe because there is some sort of trade mark, but I'm sure someone can enlighten us

I've always been intrigued by how they smoke (although never intrigued enough to actually buy one!) so let us know how they are

You may be buying them without realising, non-Cuban Montecristo for example are sold as Excalibur in Europe because of the trademark issue.

I've never seen Excalibur so definitely haven't tried them, but I need to look at the other NCs I've tried to see if any NC Cuban brands are lurking in there

Although there will likely be issues involving brand names if the americano embargo is ever lifted.

There is sure to be a protracted legal battle in the US when the embargo is lifted. All of the trademarks held by General will more than likely go to court unless they get paid off. Cohiba, La Gloria Cubana, Ramone Allones, Bolivar, Punch, Partagas, Sancho Panza and HdM are all trademarked in the US by General. General also has El Rey del Mundo by virture of owning Villazon. Fonseca is made by MATASA and owned by Manuel Quesada Jr. Most other brands are owned by Altadis so they will come in with little trouble when the embargo is done with.

That's really interesting, not exactly sure what I'll be getting but definitely some NC stuff. I will certainly share my thoughts. After looking into this I went round some reviews and I've come to the conclusion that I need to buy a box of opus x and arturo fuente sun grown next, by all accounts very good smokes.
