This thread may be over - or softening down - and I exhausted the topic with people on Facebook.
I wish I could trawl back and copy some of what I wrote there. In any case, many comments here go back to schooling and discipline.
I read the start of this thread when packing up to drive home to the UK from Luxembourg and I kept thinking en route about what monkey mentioned about "emancipated teaching". Or it may have been "emancipated education". I won't bother scrolling back.
I just want to say, as a teacher, that I have NEVER been free to do my own thing in my everyday job. Since Kenneth Baker and the Tories, then all through the Labour years, my job has been more and more centrally dictated, less and less 'free'. ALL teachers have had to concentrate on pass rates, and teach kids to pass tests.
There is a part of me that really likes this structure, but I can assure you it was only ever "free and easy" til about 1984. Now there's some irony.
If standards have dropped - if expectations are lower - then I can assure you that that is because successive governments sanctioned changes and we have had to motor them.
Where there is major disruption through a lack of discipline in schools, the staff are often very, very competent but simply forbidden to do certain things about it. I could write pages on this but am not going to. This hands-tied-behind-your-back thing is the most frustrating thing about the job. Oh, as well as the turgid, meaningless paperwork.
We all have highly non PC conversations behind closed doors about what is wrong and what we would seriously like to do, but there is - frankly - fuck all we can do about it.
It is not unknown for a teacher to be spoken to by management if he/she raises the voice to settle a fractious class, or an awkward child. Yet it is possible for a child to call a member of staff a fucking cunt and get away with it.
You become very adept at signalling what you really mean. If you are successful, no kid swears at you.
I guess I'm writing this because most people have memories of their own time at school very clearly in their heads when they write things about schools and teachers.
So I'll just say that the vast majority of schoolteachers I know work hard, control well and have a good relationship with most of their classes. Made up for the best part of great kids.
We have a problem with the nutcase minority in schools, and I think we should slam them - not dither about - because I feel guilty when bad behaviour goes unpunished. Frankly, I've felt it could tumble into civil unrest like we saw a fortnight ago.
I'm a bit of a softie in life... As a teacher. As a Dad... but some things need an iron fist.
We do need government confirmed codes on how to deal with shits in schools, because at present we haven't really got any.

Amongst all the doom and glum and talk of break down in society we must keep in mind that it is a small minority that were involved in the riots its only a small minority who make trouble in the class room and only a few girls who get pregnant,i know my kids were not involved and i guess none of your kids were i do not think it is anything to do with the liberal left or the hard right, just that we and most countries have scumbags in it, now if we could find a way to get rid of them
