Good evening everybody,

I was wondering if anybody on here is a keen gun enthusiast like myself? I was brought up in the "country" and I've been shooting for a few years.

Does anybody else share my passion? I've not got a Firearm's certificate as I only use .22 air rifles currently but I've used shotguns in the past

As the shady pussy says, there are quite a few gun lovers hanging around. I was trying to arrange a forum clay shoot at Holland and Holland last year, but a combination of factors conspired against it in the end...

I'm mainly a shotgun man myself (off on a charity clay competition on Sunday), though have had varying degrees of fun with rifles and sidearms at times too.

Never felt the need to go shooting in "my" time. After 23 yrs in the Army you get a bit tired of shooting. I know it's a very different style and is seen as relaxing but I've never been that interested in it.
I went clay shooting once on a free day out with Landrover. A quick blast round the woods in a new 110 and then some clays. Couldn't get the hang of it really. Goes against the grain. I was still trying to carry out the 4 marksmanshp principles and it just wasn't working. So I gave up.

Pre Dunblane, I used to shoot at Hawthornden in Scotland and was the proud owner of a Browning Hi-Power and a Czech 9mm P38 knock off. The Hi-Power was brilliant and the P38 prone to jamming on "police pistol." I now use a Ugartachea over and under for occasional clay pigeons.

Dunblane killed off sport shooting in Scotland.

You're probably right, Monkey. My love was police pistol and I was pretty good at it too! When I was over in Georgia a few years ago, I really pissed off my GFs father by beating him on the range! I was amazed to find I still had it!

I have a few air rifles (Air arms S410 in .22 and .177 (additional barrel, bolt and mag rather than 2 rifles), Air arms S200 in .22 and a Rutten Winstar Mach 1 DE in .177 - A beast of a springer) and pistols (Walther CP99 and ppks plus a S&W 586 with 8" barrel) but have not really had the time or place to shoot them in the last year or so. Just about to move house to somewhere with a decent range length garden so I hope to get in a bit more paper punching and can spinning soon.

I have tried clay shooting a few times and I am not a huge fan, I prefer the pinpoint accuracy of single pellet, single target to the point in the right direction, cloud of shot sort of stuff. I can see why people love it, the feeling of dusting a clay is pretty awesome, it's just not really for me.

Ah, now we're getting somewhere! An opportunity to debate the pros and cons of different shooting disciplines.

For me, I enjoy clays and game more than target shooting and hours down at the range. There's a certain dynamism to clay/game shooting which I really enjoy - Pull!, bring the gun up and mount it (all whilst acquiring the target), then pick up the clay/bird, get the gun following the correct path, follow through (if that's the appropriate method for the target), judge the right amount of lead and then pull the trigger. Then there's the second clay (or the following birds). Brilliant! And, there's nothing better than finding a stand where the designer has really pulled out all the stops to make the target only just hittable. There's certainly more to it than 'point in the right direction' (well, okay, at heart that's the basis of all shooting I suppose!)

Meanwhile, there's a certain monotomy to shooting a stationary target, especially once you've pretty much got yourself down to your best groupings. Still, there's a certain nice feeling when you check your target and your holes are interlinked! I suppose you can vary the challenge too if you like... For example a 150yrd range on some of the roughest terrain that Scotland has got to offer - at times it seemed impossible to even look at the target, let alone aim at it, given some of the lumps and bumps we were shooting off! (45mm grouping with ironsights and 20mm with SUSAT for the record... ) I think my favourite part of target shooting is the feeling of utter relaxation you get from controlling your breathing etc. - strange to some people to think that a mini-explosion mere millimeters from you face could be so closely linked to calm and relaxation! Better than popping into HMV for a Piano Chillout Moods CD...
