  • To Nub or not to Nub that is the question!!!

I read conflicting articles about how much to smoke a cigar down too. I have read that a cigar should not be smoked down to the smallest nub but just over the last third some say cigar reviewers say they smoke down to the smallest nub.

On a personal level I smoke down to the nub if the cigar that I have is really working for me. If its a new cigar that I have not tried before I generally try and stick with it even if I have not enjoyed the smoke.

I understand that because Cubans for the most part are hand rolled that they will vary in smoke. It seems strange that the same cigar brand can smoke so diffrently on every occasion maybe thats the beauty of it all.

Do you always smoke to the nub or finish early?
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!'

    The Dawg.

If I like a cigar, I'll finish it off using a toothpick!

I mean... it's the same tobacco throughout. So, the nub end is just the same as the red end, only it doesn't have much tobacco in front of it to "filter" the smoke. The way I see it, I've paid for it: if I'm enjoying it, I'm going to CONSUME it!

      Rest in Peace, Old Friend.

My rule (TJ's Rule No. 3) is to smoke until I get tired of my fine puro.

I have found that this little mantra comes in handy when the enjoyment has ceased and there an inch or two left on the puro. Instead of feeling obligated to smoke a puro to the "bitter" end simply because it's a "fine puro," I'm able to put it down with no regrets.

Just the other night I put down a Cohiba Robusto with 2 inches left because I had had enough and the wrapper was unraveling

One thing I never do, but many of my mates do, is to relight a puro after it's been extinguished for 1/2 hour or more. It's done! If I decide to continue smoking later, I spark up a fresh one rather than suffer through a half smoked puro that is decomposing.

Names TJ, TJCoro, and the goal is total fulfillment, not stretching a played puro.

To rellight a Puro after its been down longer then 5 minutes is to long for me. If the cherry gets cold and brittle ,its done! Some gars like Don Pepin Blue lable,5vega Miami I will smoke to within an inch of its life. But all in all I find most sticks after 2/3 start to get bitter and hot. IMHO

You're right about that. But I have never had an issue of 1926 Padron or Punch Gran Puro getting bitter and hot no matter how far along it gets.

On the other hand, every single CC I've had gets an acidic taste just before where the label is. I attribute this to the rollers' sweaty hands.

U thought it was sweat! They probably were scratching their ball or tuna!

Going back to the original post, the only time I've seen anyone say only smoke to the bottom third is in that old cigar etiquette manual which is ridiculous on many accounts.

                  Smoke to the nub imo.

I have the same philosophy as TJ, if im enjoying my cigar i will smoke it untill it burns my lips or fingers ha ha. But if im not getting any joy from it i let it die.

Yep, same as TJ here too. Keep smoking until you can't, or until you stop enjoying it. Seems pointless otherwise to me.
