  • A Farewell to My Best Friend, Tuxie

Yesterday I took my Greyhound in to the ER because he was in severe pain walking and panting. The day before he was completely normal. But we were nevertheless given the news that he had bone cancer and we were given an option of amputation of his front leg from the shoulder or putting him to sleep. Though they felt the cancer spread to his spine and he would likely only get worse...

Tuxie was bred to race at the track in West Virginia. His racing name was Iruska Dick. He raced until he had a leg injury at the age of three. He raced and won in the highest division.

We were introduced to Tuxie when he was 4. He was with a couple of other dogs that were being used to promote rescuing these greyhounds by giving them a home after they are done racing instead of having them put down.

Tuxie was black and had white on his chest. We thought it looked like a tuxedo; hence his name. No one seemed to be giving him much attention that day that we met him. I figured it was because Tuxie had a broken tail. It was broken at a 90 degree angle so that it looked like an L coming down from his back. He also was so strong that it was like petting a furry rock when you touched him. But my wife and I were drawn to him and he surprised us by giving my wife the biggest hug. We brought him home on the coldest day of the year, January 22, 2004.

He was my closest friend. Last night we said goodbye to him.

Here's to you Tuxedo Dick Lightenpaws...

Sorry to hear your bad news Larry, you give him a loving home after his retirement from racing which is very commendable.

deepest sympathies larry!!! i know from experience that sometimes we can relate to, and communicate, with animals on a level we can't do with other humans!!! at least tuxi has passed on from this world knowing that he was loved and cared for, and given the condition, i think you'll agree he's in a better place now!!! hope that doesn't sound insensitive.......

                    all the very best pal,

                      Huge sympathy to you, Larry.

It has been two years this week since our beloved labrador Max died here in the house. I have been on holiday this week for half term just as when he died.

I cried like a child, on and off, for a couple of days. I know if I had been bound to go to work, I would have to have had a couple of days off. I wouldn't have been able to do the job.

We went for about three months before realising we were all glum without Max. Without a dog.

We chose Archie from Kent Labrador Rescue - and it was the best thing we could have done.

Now the pesky git won't leave my side. But he never complains about the smell.

Just Brotherhood to you, mate. x

                        Sad news indeed.

Just remember, you rescued him and gave him a great life. He was a lucky boy.

So sorry to hear Larry, it's always heart wrenching when you lose a pet, they are part of the family and like others have said he had a great life with you.

Every pet is a character and they enrich our lives with their little quirks, forever optomistic and always ready for fuss.

He couldn't have wished for any more, well maybe a puff on a Habano!
