  • New computer kit

Thought I'd start an on going thread about new computer kit.

Just been given an 1TB Apple Time Capsule from my Mum which is over-priced but bloody useful - Apple Time Machine just does it all in the background without any worry. Circa 239pounds. Ouch.

Deano, we are just starting to migrate to Apple, so far I have only lost half of one arm...when you say 'Does it all' can you be more specific for us Gates geeks!

Will simply backup your whole HDD to Time Capsule on a regular basis without needing any input except the first very simple setup.

I use time machine on the Mac in the Studio. I have an extra drive in the tower which it backs up all my files to and I swap the drive out every couple of months and send it to my folks. However I turn off the auto back up and backup at the end of every session because when you are running lasses of audio from a drive and then it trys to back up at the same time it sometimes says "not today" lol

So it's like a hard drive really and a bit of software?

Typical of Apple to give it a name and charge four times as much for it.

(spoken as someone who wishes he bought Apple shares 10 years ago!!!)

We have 3 x 1Tb (around ?120 each) drives on our network at home which mostly get used for storage of ripped DVDs and music so we can stream them to various machines when we want, beats looking for the disc each time. We played around with automated backups and with win 7 it is pretty easy to schedule a backup routine to a networked drive as long as it is mapped as a local one, ie given a letter in My Computer.

I am looking at sorting out a proper server to handle all the storage and scheduling stuff that we need (as well as give the mrs something to play with while she does her MS qualifications).

Te main hurdle to anything like this is going to be having a decent network speed, everything on ours is gigabit apart from one crucial piece, the Virgin router which everything has to go through, that is only 10/100 so holds everything up so a workaround is being planned for that.
Lo there do I see my Father. Lo there do I see my Mother, and my Sisters and my Brothers. Lo there do I see the line of my people, back to the beginning. Lo they do call to me. They bid me take my place among them, in the halls of Valhalla where the brave may live forever.

It sort of is, but it's also a wifi box so you don't need to plug your mac into it, it just backs up wirelessly. I think you need to do your first backup by ethernet cable or the like as it will take a while then after that it just backs up with out you even knowing it... unless you're trying to play 60 tracks of audio at the same time! lol

Yes, but the best bit about Time Machine is when you have to retrieve something and actually enter the app. It's like your very own Star Wars movie.

I have it on the big mac in the studio but it backs up to hard wired disks.... never needed it, but you're right it looks a bit Doctor Who!
