Sitting with my family I realized how lucky I am to have them and a new job that I truly enjoy. Then on the other brain cell I think how about those Brothers of this forum who don't have a job to go to everyday. And what it must do to their families and them. You know sometimes we forget to thank our creator for the truly small things in life.
So with this said how many B/SOTL are still out of work ?

I think the title might be a bit general to the more specific content, particularly the discussion of luck and its loss. Maybe we should focus, at least for this thread, on how we are doing individually rather than as a civil body, however cancerous?

I lost my job in June and was out of work until a month ago.

It is only a temp job until Christmas but I am grateful for it all the same. Who knows come the New Year!.

I was buying cigars on a regular basis when I was working full time so I am now able to enjoy one or two a week from the stock I managed to build up. I still buy the odd good deal from Mike as a little treat.

My heart goes out to those who are less fortunate than myself so I for one will be answering Mike,s call to send some sticks for those who would otherwise have to go without at Christmas.

I must say, people's testimonies in this thread are a bit of shock (it is one thing to note the figures on the news and another to hear someone's story). As of late, one would expect such a climate here in Greece (which, you may have heard, has not been doing such a good job fiscally). But to read the same takes on unemployment, crime, and prospects by people in the UK and the USA is disconcerting. In almost every post, you could just change the "location" field and you would think they are the words of a citizen in one of the less robust economies.

I am a freelance business software consultant and since the summer, for the first time in ten years, business has halved. In other words, it is holding up - fortunately. Nevertheless, and I say this with no intention whatsoever of taking this thread to actual politics, I am saddened to find out that optimism is in very short supply everywhere (justifiably so, of course).

For another perspective - I, along with 2 other partners, own a medium sized advertising agency. We *barely* managed to make it through 2008-2009, but not without great personal sacrifice, and im sad to say without making some people who were family redundant.

We had strong books, but cashflow was eating us alive. Careful management through this period meant that we were able to bounce back quickly. So far this year we are having our best year ever in the history of the company, and have hired more than 20 full time positions.

it really kills me that during this period the government is saving the wealthy bankers, but are not doing anything to help the small business man.

So yes, i am very happy to be employed. On the other side of the pond I have two brothers who have always been part of an in-demand construction crew… they have been unemployed for more than 6 months. Neither of them take government assisteance - even with families to feed. instead they pick up work wherever they can from doing yard work to moving houses. I pray for them, and all the other families out there that are struggling to get by.

I'm 18 yrs old and been working since i was about 16, like most people nowadays. However, since i started working ive been helping my mum out with all the utilities, food etc and ive never had a problem with that, thats just the way the ball bounces, albeit, a medicine ball but bouncing nonetheless lol.

Me and my gf stayed in Aberdeen last year for about 8 months but with Aberdeen being so expensive, we had to flit home to my mothers down here at Loch Lommond, hoping to get a flat in Elgin at the end of the year.

Education and the Defence (7%, thats a number that is going to leave us looking like tits in the next 4 years.) sector is going to be hit the hardest and personally, I seen this coming months ago, round about May, JUNE !!

For the people who complain about the cuts, and voted torrie, blame yourselves, and for those who never voted torrie, blame those who did !

As for the ''How do students afford good cigars?'' question, I personally put away a couple of pounds a day from my change and if its surmountable at the end of the weeks, month, and not needed, I treat myself to a few sticks

I worked in the city for twentysomething years before being made redundant for the first time in my life 18 months ago. After 9 months I found another job that started in january...I was there 3 months when I got made redundant again. Fortunately, I'm in between marriages with no rug rats to take care of either so I decided straight away that I'm gonna sell up and get out.....the way I see it is that if I'm gonna be poor then I'll be much less aware of it in some sun-drenched exotic country where everyone else is poor too
